200 Years of Pride & Prejudice

Jane Austen’s masterpiece was published on the 28th of January, 1813.
Join the world in celebrating the bicentennial of England’s most celebrated novel.

Austen’s “darling child” is the subject of several new books, including Susannah Fullerton’s Celebrating Pride and Prejudice: 200 Years of
Jane Austen's Masterpiece. (#14396) In this beautiful and detailed book, we learn a great deal about P&P, beginning with the story of its
>> In Print

publication and its reception among the famous and infamous. On page 17 we learn the story of Austen’s neighbor Miss Mary Benn, a
poor spinster, who was the very first non-Austen given the pleasure of hearing the book read aloud, and one of very few people in history
who heard it from the author’s lips. She was delighted even though, as Susannah tells us, “She died
without ever knowing who had written it, and that she had heard it from the lips of its author.”
The book goes on to detail the backgrounds of the major characters, including a section on the
significance of Mr Collins’ preference for the “demeaning” Fordyce’s Sermons. (p. 98) We learn about
different editions with wildy varying illustrations and cover images (p. 141) – many of which will be
familiar to anyone who has browsed our shelves – and continue our journey through translations,
films, merchandise, and a discussion of modern Austen fandom. For similar titles, visit www.janeaustenbooks.net/aboutpandp

Jan 28, 2013 saw an unprecedented online gathering of Janeites from all over the world. The Jane Austen Centre in Bath
hosted an international “readathon” of Pride & Prejudice. The novel was broadcast to the loving throngs in a manner that
would likely surprise its author. Through web cameras set up in Bath, Chawton, and many other locations fans and
Austen notables continued a 200 year old tradition of sharing this beloved novel. visit www.janeausten.co.uk/readathon
