Spring 2014
The ball began. It was rather honour than happiness to Fanny, for the first
dance at least: her partner was in excellent spirits, and tried to impart them to
her but she was a great deal too much frightened to have any enjoyment till
she could suppose herself no longer looked at.
-- Mansfield Park, Ch. 28
When discussing Mansfield Park, many people use words like “dark,” or “controversial.”
Readers – even die-hard Austen fans – admit to not having read it, or having picked it up and
put it back down again without finishing. But while it is certainly not as “light,
bright, and sparkling” as Pride & Prejudice, which turned 200 last year, Mansfield Park
is one of the most important works in the Austen canon.
