NEBOSH International Oil and Gas Certification Course

Course Duration 6days + 1 day exam. [40 Hours delivered over 5 teaching days]

Course Designed The course is for Managers, Supervisors, Employee representatives, newly appointed health and safety advisers

Course Overview This course is designed specifically for those with safety responsibilities in the oil & gas industry and focuses on
international standards and management systems, enabling delegates to effectively discharge workplace safety
responsibilities both onshore and offshore. The course is not a stand-alone safety qualification.

Course Structure The course consists of one unit divided into five elements and is classroom based. Some private study is recommended in
addition to scheduled course attendance. The course is assessed by a two-hour written examination on the final day of
the course, or at a later date if preferred.
Course Content The NEBOSH Oil and Gas Certificate course comprises a single unit of study:
 Health, safety and environmental management in context
 Hydrocarbon process safety 1
 Hydrocarbon process safety 2
 Fire protection and emergency response
 Logistics and transport operations

Requirement To study the NEBOSH Oil and Gas Certificate you will need a good understanding of safety issues. This can be from
practical experience or from having achieved a qualification, such as the NEBOSH International Certificate.

Prerequisites It is recommended that delegates have attained NEBOSH National General Certificate or International General
Certificate or equivalent and have knowledge of hydrocarbon production and process operations.

Target Audience The course is intended for those who have responsibility for safety in the oil & gas industry as part of their day-to-day
duties, including:

Certification NEBOSH certification will be issued on successful completion of the course.


Assessment The course is assessed by a two hour written examination, which consists of ten “short answer” questions and one “long
answer” question. All questions are compulsory and the candidate’s scripts are marked by external examiners appointed
by NEBOSH.
NEBOSH International General Certificate [IGC]

Course Duration 80 Hours delivered over 10 teaching days

Course Overview NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health
The NEBOSH International General Certificate provides a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of
occupational safety and health, promoting the highest standards of safety and health. The syllabus is based on
international, technical and other standards (ILO Codes of Practice, for instance) and internationally recognized
good practice.

Course design The Certificate has been designed for managers, supervisors, worker representatives and others who require a
comprehensive knowledge and understanding of safety and health principles and practices.

Course Elements The NEBOSH International General Certificate course is split into three units of study, covering the Management of
Safety and Health and Controlling Workplace Hazards each of which is assessed separately:

 Unit IGC1: Management of International Health and Safety

 Foundations in Health and Safety


 Health and Safety Management Systems 1 - Policy
 Health and Safety Management Systems 2 - Organizing
 Health and Safety Management Systems 3 - Planning
 Health and Safety Management Systems 4 - Measuring, Audit and Review

 Unit IGC2: Control of International Workplace Hazards

 Workplace Hazards and Risk Control


 Transport Hazards and Risk Control
 Musculoskeletal Hazards and Risk Control
 Work Equipment Hazards and Risk Control
 Electrical Safety
 Fire Safety
 Chemical and Biological Health Hazards and Risk Control
 Physical and Psychological Health Hazards and Risk Control

 Unit IGC3: Workplace-Based Practical Assessment

Requirements There are no entry requirements to enroll to the NEBOSH International General Certificate course
but it is strongly advised that candidates have good understanding of basic health and safety.
Courses delivered in English are assessed in English and a good standard of written English is essential.

Assessment This consists of two written examinations and a practical safety and health assessment of a workplace.
Student must pass each of the two examination papers and the practical assessment to be awarded the
NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health.

Progression The NEBOSH International General Certificate meets the entry requirements for the NEBOSH Diploma
in Occupational Safety and Health, which is designed for those looking to become health and safety practitioners.
