An overview of teachers’ competencies
Competency refers to personal characteristics (e.g. skills
knowledge, attitudes) that an individual posesses or needs
to acquire in order to perform an activity within a specific
context (Sampson and Fytros, 2008, cited in Malinina, 2015)

Several studies present a strong focus on ICT competency

to teach or use software and hardware to assist language
teaching (Mohammed & Almekhlafi, 2017; Correos, 2014)
General Computer Knowledge, File Management Knowledge, System
Maintenance and Security Knowledge, Word Processing Skills,
Communication Skills (E-mail), Web Skills, Presentation Skills
(PowerPoint) (Correos, 2014).
Computer literacy on the other hand has been associated with
application literacy which focuses on the ability to use specific
software applications such as word processing, spreadsheet or
presentation software (Correos, 2014 p. 5)
Basic computer literacy skills include word processor, email, mailing
lists, and the World Wide Web. These skills are essential in todays’
school systems as more tasks are completed using computer
technologies. (Correos, 2014 p. 5)
Technology in the classroom

Early technology in the classroom includes uses of tape recorders, VCRs, OHP.
