Passing Drills

(Including catching)
Semi-circle passing
- Players are organised into groups of 4-6 and set up into a semi-circle position (cones
optional). The number in each group will depend on class numbers
- One player is to be positioned in the centre of the semi-circle
- Players turn side on with either shoulder pointing at the centre player and feet shoulder
width apart
- Players pass the ball across the body backwards and forwards to the player in the middle
- The centre person catches the ball and passes to the next person in the semi-circle
- Positions are rotated
Stage 1
Progression
- Increase speed and distances
- Another ball can be added to increase difficulty
KTP
- Receiving and passing across the body
- Hands outside of ball and fingers spread
- Stepping with outside foot
- When catching, hands extended and palms open to receive the ball

Zig zag passing

- Students are organised into groups of 6-8 depending on the class size
- Cones are positioned in a zig zag formation (5m apart) with one student on each cone, one
ball per group
- The starting student steps forwards slightly then passes the ball backwards to the next
person on the cone and so on (replicating rules of touch football)
- Players follow their ball, with the end player running to the starting cone to continue the
activity
- Once it has been completed several times and students understand,
a competition between groups is established, with the first group to
complete two rounds being the winners
Stage 2/3
Progression
- Increase distances between cones
- Students can complete a moving zig zag, where students are running
constantly to ensure they receive the ball on the run
KTP
- Accurate passes
- Ball trajectory in a spinal positon and backwards towards the next
person
- Stepping away from target with outside foot, then stepping in and
releasing to target
- Receiving the ball with bent elbows and open palms

Flying V
- Students are organised into teams of 6, with two teams lined up diagonally to form a V
(cones can be placed 5m to ensure students position correctly)
- The top student of the V from either group starts with the ball who when instructed by the
teacher, passes the ball down the V, backwards passing to the last person who runs forward
to score a touchdown over the line positioned approximately 5m from the last player
- After scoring a touchdown, the player with the ball runs to the top position and all other
players in the team next down to the next cone
- Students continue, aiming to score as many touchdowns as possible until the teacher calls
time, with the team with the most touchdowns being the winners
- Teams switch sides and activity can be repeated
Stage 3
Progression
- Distances between cones can be increased
- Students can perform activity on the run
- Competition can be for 1 or 2 rounds, seeing who can
score a touchdown first
KTP
- Hands up and fingers spread when catching the ball
- Pass should be backwards, with a spiral trajectory
- Step with outside foot away from the target, step in and release towards target
- Ball is carried in two hands when running with the ball

Drop out, drop in

- Students are organised into teams of 6, with two teams per area (approximately 20x 20m)
with a scoring zone at each end
- One team becomes the attackers and the other becomes the defenders
- The game is started at the half mark with a tap ball
- Defenders are to defend the oncoming attackers by touching them and retreating 5m at all
roll balls
- Attackers retain the ball for 6 touches
- When a ball carried is touched in the defending team’s half, the defender who made the
touch must exit the field and jog around the nearest sideline marker
- The defender then returns to the field in an onside position
- Focus should be on the attacking making effective and appropriate passes between
teammates to score a touchdown within the scoring zone
Stage 4
Progression
- Two different players must affect a touch before the ball
carrier must stop to perform a roll ball and both
defending players must run around a ‘defending marker’
- Distances and number of players in each team can be
manipulated
- Another ball can be added
KTP
- Correct passing technique backwards to teammate
- Awareness of space and positioning
- Effective scoring of a touchdown within 6 touches
