HLTH 2203 Physical Performance Lab 3 Touch football 27th, 10th, 17th March – April

(Weeks 1-3)

Tutorial notes
Week 1
Warm up: Stuck in the mud
- All students are organised into a 10m x10m area, 3 people are taggers and
half of the rest of the students are to have a ball each
- The taggers are to tag the other students, staying within the area
- If tagged, students stand with their legs apart, with the ball above their head
- Another student, not tagged, can roll the ball between the legs of the ‘stuck
student’ to get them back into the game
- Rotate through people being taggers
Stage 1
Progression
- Have the students pass the ball to the person stuck, who then have to pass it back to be back
into the game

Reach and catch

- Students are in partners, one ball between them
- One person starts with the ball and drops it in front of their partner. The
partner has to react and catch the ball before dropping to the ground.
- Complete 10 catches then students switch roles
- Progress to partner not facing the person with the ball, then turning
around as their partner calls their name and passes the ball. Complete 10
each then rotate roles
- Further progress to having the ball on the ground, lift it off to the sides for the partner to get
(bent knees, fast feet)
Stage 1

Activity 1: Missing marker

- 3 people in a group, with four cones set up in a square approx. 5x5, one
ball per group
- Student with the ball passes ball to person adjacent to them on cone –
stationary pass
- Progress to leading to free marker and passing to either students,
however not passing on the diagonal (have to wait for lead to free cone)
Stage 1
KTP
- Step with outside foot
- Step in
- Then release

Activity 2: 2 v 1
- In 5x5 area, 2 students become attackers and 1 is the defender
- Start with one person defending the passes of the two attacking
students
- If the defender touches the ball, they passer becomes the defender
and the defender now becomes an attacker
- Rotate through roles
Stage 2
Progression
- See how many touches between the attackers before a bad pass or dropping the ball
(30seconds)
HLTH 2203 Physical Performance Lab 3 Touch football 27th, 10th, 17th March – April
(Weeks 1-3)

Activity 3: 2 v 1
- In 10 v 5 grid have 2 attacking players start at one end and on defender
in the middle
- The defender runs forward and puts pressure on attackers.
- Attackers are to evade defender to score a try by getting the ball to the
other end and placing it on the ground
- Rotate through attackers and defenders
Stage 2/3
Progression
- Intro wraps and switches to manipulate play and beat the defender
- Combine 2 teams of 3 onto one grid to rotate through positions
- Add loop, by having defenders (3 students) starting on side of area at middle cones,
and attackers (6 students) at opposite side of area > students run around the cone in
front (attackers and defenders opposite) and becomes a 2 v 1 as before in the area
Ø Try wraps and switches

Modified game: 3 v 3
- In a 10 x 10 area, organise 3 attackers and 3 defenders
- Attackers are to work the area and try get passed defenders to score
a try
- If touched, start again, having 3 turns before rotating through
positons
- Have 3 teams of 3 on one area, therefore the extra group has a break
whilst other two are playing
- Include switches and wraps
Stage 3/4

Week 2
Warm up: Roll ball tag
- An area 10 x10m is used, with half the class getting a touch football each, and 6 students
being nominated to be taggers (number can be altered based on numbers in class).
- The taggers without a ball are to tag the students with touch balls. If
tagged, students are to slam the ball down, then step over (replicating a
roll ball as used in touch football) for the tagger to then pick up and no
longer be a tagger.
- The student who was tagged picks up the ball and now becomes a tagger
- Students continue until concept is understood and bodies are warmed up
Stage 1
Progression
- To progress students, if tagged, they are to slam the ball down and step over, however for
the tagger to pick the ball up, they are to tap the ball with their foot, replicating a tap ball,
which is used at the start of play, after a try is scored and when a penalty is awarded.
- Have more students to be taggers and increase the area to make it more challenging
KTP
- Roll ball: slam ball down and step over
- Tap ball: ball on ground, kick slightly forward with foot and then pick up.

Activity 1: Staggered passing

- Students are to be put into groups of 4, each standing on a cone adjacent to each other
- The student with the ball starts, passing to the person next to them. They then run forward
onto the cone. Each student repeats, passing the ball then running forward onto the cone.
HLTH 2203 Physical Performance Lab 3 Touch football 27th, 10th, 17th March – April
(Weeks 1-3)

- On the way back, the ball is passed to the next person so they can
receive the ball on the run
- Rotate through groups, and switch the starting person each time to
ensure all students have a turn
Stage 2
Progression
- Split the class evenly into two groups and set up the same drill on the
other side of the area. Have the two groups compete against each
other to see who can complete 2 rounds of staggered passing first
KTP
- Step out to the side
- Step in with other foot
- Release ball backwards to oncoming player

Activity 2: Roll balls

- Students are to be put into pairs, with 2 pairs combining to form a group of 4, lining up
cones either side of a 5 x 20m area (cones at every 5m)
- The first person from the pair runs forward to the first cone, slams the
ball down and steps over for their partner to pick the ball up after them
- This person then runs forward and places the ball down, stepping over
for their partner to pick the ball up
- Students continue this down the line of cones (5 cones) until the end.
- They turn around and then repeat on the way back
- The next group of 2 is to then repeat the same activity
Stage 2
Progression
- Have students run forward and ‘initiate the touch’ by putting their hand out to imitate
touching a defender – continue the drill as above with the ‘touch’ added
Further progression
- The activity is the same as above, however the oncoming partner now becomes the ‘dummy
half’, meaning they can't score or get touched (becomes a turn over)
- The student who places the ball down then runs around and receives the ball at speed from
the dummy half to score a try at the 10m cones.
Stage 3
KTP
- Initiate the touch
- Slam the ball down
- Step over
- Receive ball at pace

Activity 3: 3 v 1 – gain distance

- In groups of four created by combining 2 groups of 2 from the above activity, groups are to
position themselves at the start of the 5 x 20m area set up from the
previous activity
- One student from the group becomes the defender and 3 become the
attackers
- The defender is to initiate the touch on the attacker with the ball. The
person with the ball then slams the ball down and steps over for another
attacker to become the dummy half
- The dummy half then passes the ball to either teammate before getting
touched by the defender
HLTH 2203 Physical Performance Lab 3 Touch football 27th, 10th, 17th March – April
(Weeks 1-3)

- The defender has to move back 5m after each touch before coming forward and going for
the next touch
- Students continue to the end of the area, then switch roles and come back before the net
group is to go
Stage 3
KTP
- Fast roll balls
- Initiate the touch
- Passing backwards and at speed

Activity 4: Pick and pop

- Students in groups of 4 are to use the same area as above.
- The defender starts at the first 5m cone and the attackers line up in a line behind each other
facing the defender. The first attacker has the ball
- The attackers run forward towards the defender, making the touch and
performing a roll ball. The middle person then crouches down and pops
the ball up to the last attacker coming behind
- Attackers then continue this down the area until they reach the end
- Rotate through positions and continue on the way back
Stage 2/3
Progression
- Have students complete ‘bumper cars’ on the way up, initiating the touch – 3 touches on the
way up
- Then 3 touches on the way back are used to aim to score a try at the end of the area
KTP
- Initiate touch, slam and step
- Pop ball straight up off ground
- Run towards defender at speed

Modified game: Waves

- Students are organised into 2 separate areas of 10 x20m (split class in half)
- Students are then to complete a 3 v 4 activity, with 3 defenders trying to block the 4
attackers from scoring a try at the end of the area
- Play starts with the first student performing a tap ball, with the ball on the
ground and slightly rolling it forward by kicking it – they then initiate the
touch on the defender
- The attackers are then to work together to score a try
- Skills from previous activities are to be included, as well as combining skills
learnt throughout other lessons
- Rotate through defending and attacking, ensuring students have a turn at
all roles
Stage 3/4
KTP
- Initiate the touch, slam ball down and step over
- Positioning behind the dummy half to receive the ball
- Fast movement
- Awareness of space and positioning

- Students are organised into groups of 5, with 3 being attackers, 1 defender and 1 umpire
- In a straight-line area 20-25m long, attackers aim initiate the touch to
progress up the field to score a touchdown, while the defender aims to
make the touch.
- Umpire must control game and ensure defending player gets back 5m
after each touch
- Students rotate roles after each turn
Stage 2
Progression
- Increase area
- Change number of players
- Incorporate switches and wraps
KTP
- Initiate the touch on defender – gain distance

- Have students include pick and pop and pick and pass strategies to
increase chance of scoring
Stage 3
Progression
- Increase area
- Change number of students
- Include umpire to govern offside rule
