Orthopedic Surgeons are trained in diagnosing and treating conditions of the musculoskeletal system.

Orthopedic Surgeons are required to do 4 years of pre-med at a college, get their Bachelor’s Degree, and

then go to a Medical School to either get their M.D. or D.O. After getting either one of the before

National and Local Professions Organizations:

One national organization of orthopedic surgeons is called the American Association of Orthopedic

Surgeons, or AAOS. There is also an association of orthopedic nurses called AAON.

Related Areas:

Some professions that work closely with Orthopedic Surgeons are Orthopedic Nurses, Physical

and injuries of the musculoskeletal system. Physical Therapists help work with people that have

Career Outlook:

Orthopedic Surgery is becoming more and more robotic- surgeons are now making smaller incisions and

various technological devices in order to minimize recovery time. The job outlook for this profession

seems to be growing most likely due to the increasing demand for healthcare in a growing and aging

society. The fastest growing speciality in Orthopedic Surgery is in Sports Medicine because now people

are looking for several preventative measures and ways to have the sports players get back to playing their

sport faster and with more ease.

Terminology:
In order to make the most of my mentorship, it is better to know some basic conditions of the

musculoskeletal system and many of the prefixes, suffixes, and directional languages to get a fuller grasp

of what the surgeon is doing and why.

Things I Want to Learn:

● Is it possible to shorten the amount of training it requires to fully get into this position?

● Am I required to major in a medicine related field while I am doing my undergraduate

degree?

● Can I do multiple fellowships and specialize in several aspects of orthopedic surgery at

once?
