The Late Dr. John McCulloch of HCA/HealthONE’s Presbyterian/St.

Luke’s
Medical Center Profiled in the Journal of Neurosurgery Spine

Denver, CO, March 11, 2019 --(PR.com)-- The late Dr. John McCulloch, first Director of
Presbyterian/St. Luke's (P/SL) Advanced Center for Spinal Microsurgery, was featured in a paper
published in The Journal of Neurosurgery Spine, the official journal of the American Association of
Neurologic Surgeons (AANS).

The article was entitled, “Origins of eponymous instruments in spine surgery.” McCulloch was one of
eight surgeons the authors selected for profiling based on their innovative development of instruments
which impacted our present day practice of spine surgery. The soft tissue retractor McCulloch designed
for decompression of the spine using the operating microscope was highlighted. However, the manuscript
also pointed out McCulloch's contributions to post graduate medical education, particularly his pioneering
organization and co-directorship of the first hands-on cadaver lab sponsored by a major medical
association (American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons-AAOS).

As the first Director of the P/SL Advanced Center for Spinal Microsurgery, McCulloch was instrumental
in establishing the Wednesday morning Spine Grand Rounds which continues to this day. This was the
first spine conference in the city to bring together orthopedics, neurosurgery, rehab medicine and
neuroradiology for a multidisciplinary discussion of spine pathology.

The North American Spine Society (NASS) has recognized McCulloch's contributions to the field with its
Leon Wiltse Award. McCulloch has also been the recipient of the Volvo Award from the International
Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine (ISSLS).

Tragically, McCulloch died in 2002 at the Annual P/SL Winter Spine Conference. In his honor, the
opening night lecture has been named, “The John McCulloch Memorial Lecture.”

The Spine Program at Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center continues to be a premier center for
minimally invasive spine surgery.
