At its meeting in October 1988, the Council of the PTS persuaded its President that an appropriate way for the Society to fulfill this obligation would be to collect together in a number of volumes his articles on Pali, the ASokan inscriptions, and Middle Indo- ‘Aryan studies. All scholars working in these fields will surely be grateful that he agreed to the suggestion. His work has appeared over the years in a large number of different joumals and books, access to which is in very many cases now rather difficult. It was decided to publish the articles in chronological order, as they appeared. For this edition all the pieces have been retyped. ‘The Council of the PTS is delighted to record its gratitude for the many years of dedicated work which Mr Norman has done for the Society, by offering his collected articles to the scholarly world.
