YXZ Intercooler Fan Kit for MPI Turbo

This is a simple add-on installation of an Electric Fan Kit for the MPI YXZ 1000 turbocharger kit.
This fan draws 3 amps. Although it can be wired independently to a user installed switch, we off
instructions that directs you to connect the Intercooler fan to the Stock Relay for the OEM radi-
ator fan. This is a 30A circuit and with the OEM fan drawing about 7 amps, it can easily handle
the additional 3 amp draw. We recommend that you bypass the OEM radiator fan so that it is
on at all times (this modification is included as the final step (#125) in our turbo installation in-
structions, but is also included here for your convenience).

If you elect to skip the OEM radiator fan bypass, the Intercooler fan will still turn on when ever
the vehicle commands the OEM radiator fan (about 200F).

Step 1
• Fan Kit As shipped
• Shroud & Fan (pre-assembly)
• Power Wiring Harness
• Plastic Dart Mounting Kit

Step 2
• Insure rubber edge trim is in place
on 2 ends
• Insure 4 bolts that secure fan to
shroud are snug
Step 3
• Push fan assembly onto bottom side
of intercooler as shown.

Step 4
• Insure rubber edge trim is in place
on both ends.
• Align fan assembly with edge of in-
tercooler to end tank weld as shown.

Step 5
• Push plastic darts straight through
intercooler core as shown.
• The head of the dart will be on the
shroud (bottom) side of the unit.
Step 6
• Install 4 rubber pads on top side of
intercooler. It is not necessary to re-
move the paper from the sticky side,
simply place paper side next to inter-
cooler.
• Install 4 plastic lock washers onto
plastic darts.

Step 7
• Pull up on dart with one hand while
pushing down on the lock washer to
tighten the assembly.
• The foam pads should be partially
compressed.
• Tim excess dart, BUT DO NOT CUT
FLUSH. LEAVE 1/4 to 1/2in of dart
sticking out of lock washer.

Step 8
• Assembly fully installed
Step 9
• Route fan wire through fire wall. It is
easiest to simply route under the sili-
cone hose air intake.
• Connect MPI supplied power har-
ness as shown.

Step 10
• Locate the fan relay. It is typically the
middle relay (# 3 out of 5).
• The correct relay has 4 wires:
• Red/Blue
• Red/Green
• Brown/Red
• Yellow/Red
• Remove the relay from its rubber
mount.
• Slit the black plastic loom about 3in
back from the relay to expose the 4
wires.

Step 11
• Strip the OEM Red/Blue wire about
1in from the relay. We prefer to not
actually cut the wire, just strip about
1/2 to 3/4in of insulation.
• Connect the Blue/White MPI fan
power wire to the Red/Blue OEM
wire.
• We recommend soldering the con-
nection.
Step 12
• Insulate new connection

Step 13
• Recover the OEM wires with the
loom that was split open initially.
• Tape loom as required.
• Remount relay to body with OEM
rubber mount.

• CONNECT BLACK MPI GROUND
WIRE TO NEGATIVE SIDE OF BAT-
TERY,

Fan Override (Part of Turbo Instructions)

• We recommend operating the vehicle at
180deg water temp or less as measured on
the Hot Side of the Radiator (TOP HOSE).
• Trail Tech sell an nice inexpensive gauge p/n
72-EH3 for 25mm hose.

• To help keep temps down, the fan can be by-

passed.
• Locate the middle relay (same as prior
steps).
• Cut wire loom back about 3 in.
• Cut Yellow wire with Red stripe.
• Connect the relay side Yellow/Red wire to
battery ground.
• Recover wire and re-mount relay.
