Sara Soliven De Guzman is an editorial writer for the Philippine Star who

wrote the article “The Manila Bay Crisis” last 4th of March 2019. This article aims to

correct De Guzman’s previous article about the Manila Bay authority that will take

care for the rehabilitation of the Manila Bay.

The article started with the correction of De Guzman’s friend Rick Ramos

about the Manila Bay authority which the author previously stated as the Manila

Bay Development Authority. Ramos further stated that De Guzman should stop

stating the word Development as there is nothing to be developed. He also said

that the so called “Battle for Manila Bay” is doomed to fail as there is no strategic

plan for the said project.

The discussion continued as the author expressed her disgrace for the

statement of DENR Secretary Roy Agullana Cimatu that he will finish the

rehabilitation for manila bay in just 12 months or one year. The author stated that

Manila Bay is way larger than Boracay as the said Bay is three times the size of

Metro Manila or Singapore. She further expressed her disapproval through the

word susmariosep.

The editorial ended with the question what’s next for the Battle for Manila

Bay?

As a critique, I think the article made some good points with regard of the

lack of a strategic plan for the rehabilitation. For me, if an action for change is
being made there should be a plan for its proper execution as I think it fall into

pieces without it. However, I also think that the government is not lacking this plan

as I believe that they will not launch a project if it is not well discussed and

planned.

I also think that the author is correct that it is merely impossible to finish the

rehabilitation in a year given the size of the Manila Bay. However, I still think with

the Filipino trait of Bayanihan we would be able to finish it in just a year.

Overall, I conclude that the article delivered some good points with regards

to the flaw of the project but I still think that with proper obedience and unity we

would be able to restore the Manila Bay into its old beauty.

A Manila Bulletin article published last December 29, 2016 titled Rizal

Memorial, Intramuros, and other historic sites showcased the move to demolish

the well known Rizal Memorial Stadium and on how it does not follow certain laws.

The said article also shows that if the said move is to be done the once known

Rizal Memorial Stadium will just be one of heritage sites that was replaced and

demolished or the once glorious and historical places that are never to be seen

again. In the article it states many people disagree with the said move as it would

further destroy our history and the glory of these historical sites.Sadly many

historical sites are being ignored or are just not preserved by our government and

even demolished or replaced for the sake of "modernization".

The article states that there is a reported move on the plan of demolishing the

Rizal Memorial Stadium and that it would be replaced and would become a

commercial district with malls and condominiums and this moved is much hated

by many people resulting in some protests. According to Section II of RA 10066,

the National Cultural Heritage Act of 2009, which provides that “no cultural

property sale may be sold, resold, or taken out of the country without first serving

a clearance from the cultural agency concerned.” thus making more people

disapprove the move as it would not follow the said act. The said act was even

asked by Rep. Cristal Bagatsing of the city’s fifth district to theHouse Committee

on Basic Education and Culture to look into the report and reminded the officials

concerned of the said act. Many people are worried that the stadium, which is
where many of important happenings in our sports history as well as a record in

the history of a Beatle's concert happened, would just be destroyed, replaced,

and forgotten.

The truth is many historical sites are now just left to be destroyed by time or even

worse get demolished like the once walls of the Army-Navy Club at the Luneta

which are now demolished. Another is when they almost sold the Manila Hotel,

which is where Gen. Douglas MacArthur spent or lived most of his life here in the

Philippines, back in the year 1997. The Intramuros or

The Walled City, is perhaps the single historical site left in Metro Manila for many

was destroyed for "modernization". Disappointingly these are just merely facts and

that we should learn to preserve and protect the remaining historical sites not only

in Metro Manila but also in the whole country itself.

Like in the article it is true that There is need not only to keep these historic sites

but also to maintain them against the ravages of time. Because of the controversy

made by the move The Department of Tourism is now in the midst of a project to

promote Intramuros with the Manila Cathedral, originally built in the 16th century,

and San Agustin Church, 400 years old, with its Museum. The Philippines or I can

say our country is home to these historical places so as Filipinos we should learn

how to protect and preserve these pieces of our history to show the future

generation the beauty of it
