Annotated Bibliography
For my research essay, I will aim to answer if alzheimers disease is hereditary through

genetics? If alzheimers is thought to be genetic, is it preventable? What is the difference between

alzheimers and dementia? If there is a way to diagnosis alzheimers early? What type of treatment

is provided after alzheimers disease is diagnosed? My grandma was just recently diagnosed with

alzheimers and I would like to if it’s hereditary and if there is anything, I can do to prevent

myself and my family from getting it.

Alzheimer's Association. BASICS OF ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE. BASICS OF ALZHEIMER’S

DISEASE, Alzheimer's Association, 2016,

alz.org/national/documents/brochure_basicsofalz_low.pdf.

In the source, “Basic of Alzheimer’s disease” by Alzheimer’s Association, was

found on their website published on October 16, 2016. The source mainly states about

basic facts and general information about Alzheimer’s such as over 5 million people are

diagnosed with it every year (Alzheimers’s Association, 2016). It talks about how it

affects the brain, how to tell if it’s alzheimers/steps to diagnose it. It also talks about what

to do if it is alzheimers, and the stages of it from the first diagnosis. The purpose of this

source is to inform people on alzheimers and the effects it has on the brain, and what the

next steps will be after diagnosis. The author is very credible because the Alzheimers
Association is one of the most well-known groups will knowledge on alzheimers. The

target audience for this article would include families who have recently had family

members diagnosed with Alzheimers. I plan to use this to attribute to the first few

paragraphs where I then plan to state my findings on the basic principles and general

information of Alzheimer’s disease.

D’Cunha, Nathan M., et al. “Evaluation of Dietary and Lifestyle Changes as Modifiers of S100β Levels

The “Evaluation of Dietary and Lifestyle Changes as Modifiers of S100β Levels in

Alzheimer’s Disease” by D’Cunha et. al published in January of 2019 as a scholarly journal, an

unusual discovery is the focus. Researchers discuss a potential contributing factor from diet that

could lead to Alzheimer’s. This factor can be also known as S100β, which is a calcium binding

protein (D’Cunha et al, 2019). The protein can essentially speed along the growth process for the

brain and cells within the body which is why researchers believe it could be a cause to

Alzheimers. Information from the very few studies on this topic, are listed in this source. The

purpose of this journal is to explain a possible cause of Alzheimer’s through scientific

experiments and research. All the contributing authors to this source are very credible professors

at Canberra University in Australia. This will give my research essay a controversial paragraph

due to it being a different cause of Alzheimer’s disease.

Haines, Jonathan L. “Alzheimer Disease: Perspectives from Epidemiology and Genetics.” Journal of

Law, Medicine & Ethics, vol. 46, no. 3, Fall 2018, pp. 694–698. EBSCOhost,

doi:10.1177/1073110518804230.

Alzheimer’s Disease: Perspectives from Epidemiology and Genetics was written by

geneticist Jonathan L Haines of Vanderbilt University and published in the fall of 2018. The

main idea of this scholarly journal is to help readers who have a family history of alzheimers,

understand the potential correlation between genetics and alzheimers disease and how these

correlations came about. Specific studies summarized in this article have found that there is

specific risk factors that can cause Alzheimers but there is also some things that have been found

that can help reduce your chances of getting the disease. The purpose of the author writing this

was to inform readers that ever since the 1950’s researchers seem to believe that genetics and the

chances of getting alzheimers are related, and if your mother has alzheimers, you are more than

likely to be an inquirer of it as well. The author is a very credible geneticist at a University and

has done many different experiments and reports involving the connection between alzheimers

and genetics. I intend to use this article to answer a lot of my main questions. The answer to a lot

of the questions lie within this article and it gives specific details on why there is a connection

between the two.

Kegel, Magdalena. “Alzheimer's Caregiving and Its Challenges: Interview with Monica Moreno

of Alzheimer's Association.” Alzheimer's News Today, Alzheimer's News Today, 21 June

2017, alzheimersnewstoday.com/2017/06/21/alzheimers-association-monica-moreno-

talks-about-the-burden-of-caregiving-in-exclusive-interview/.

The interview “Alzheimer’s Caregiving and Its Challenges : Interview with

Monica Moreno of Alzheimer’s Association” was written by Magdalena Kegel and

published on June 21, 2017 on Alzheimer’s Today website. The main idea of the

interview was to allow the interviewee to let readers know how hard it is for caregivers,

family, and the family’s financial budget when a family member is diagnosed with

alzheimers. Moreno states information on how to deal with all these factors if this

situation were to come upon the readers family so suddenly. For example some of the

information included is how to financially afford treatments and care within a facility that

she works in.The author/writer is very credible because she is an international doctor with

her PhD in Pharmaceutical Bioscience, mainly residing and doing most of her work in

Sweden. This interview with be very helpful when creating my research paper because it

gives real life views from a doctor who is interviewing and an interviewee who is a senior

director of care and support at the Alzheimers Association which is the main Alzheimers

foundation in the world today. These will be very relevant in my essay to give a pathos

appeal to my readers.

Nall , Rachel. “Is Alzheimer's Disease Hereditary? Causes and Risks.” Medical News Today,

MediLexicon International, www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/314715.php.

This article really helps bring detailed answers to my questions. In “Is Alzheimer’s

Disease Hereditary? Causes and Risks” it gives a detailed walkthrough of Alzheimers disease

mentioning fast facts, symptoms, causes, and risk factors. It gives factors that increase the risk of

getting alzheimers disease, some factors that can be altered, that are linked to preventing it and a

plethora of other helpful tips and facts. Specific risk factors that are completely controllable

include regular exercise, healthy regulated diet, and maintaining a healthy heart. One of my

questions included in my research proposal “is it preventable?”, which can be answered from the

facts given in this article. The author is Markus Macgill and he is a journalist for the website this
article was located on, Medical News Today. Due to him just being a journalist, the medical

website has real life physician’s review the articles before they are published. This is to ensure

that all the information being presented is factual and accurate. I intend to use the article to

answer my questions “If alzheimers is preventable?”, and if so, “how?”. These two questions

will create body paragraphs towards the end of my essay to come full circle in the process of

diagnosing alzheimers.

“New Molecules Reverse Memory Loss Linked to Depression, Aging.” ScienceDaily,

ScienceDaily, 14 Feb. 2019,

www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/02/190214102504.htm.

The article “New Molecules Reverse Memory Loss Linked to Depression, Aging”

was a very interesting article, and contains information unlike any of the other articles.

This article mentions an actual trial experiment that took place in January 2019, for a new

molecule in an experiment to go in and essentially repair the damaged cells that were

damaged due to old age and depression. This repairment would help reduce symptoms

and memory loss. The results of the trial were amazing. Researchers soon hope to release

the experiment in preclinical trials after it passes a few more tests. The authors were from

research organizations and were involved with the experiment. Their main purpose of

writing this article was to introduce readers to a promising new treatment in the future. I

will use this article to answer my question about treatments that are avaible and I intend

to put it towards the end of my research paper.

Scutti, Susan. “This Is What It's Like To Have Alzheimer's: A Patient Interview.” Medical Daily,

25 Apr. 2014, www.medicaldaily.com/alzheimers-disease-inside-out-interview-greg-

obrien-278912.
This interview is one of the most important pieces I would like to include in my

research paper. “This Is What It’s Like to Have Alzheimer’s: A Patient Interview” will

attribute to pathos in my paper because it gives a patient’s perspective on what it’s like to

have alzheimers disease. The interviewer Susan Scutti is a well-known reporter known

for her work in numerous amounts of magazines asked Greg O‘Brien many personal

questions to get his take on how everyday life is when you have alzheimers. O’Brien

stated that when he first showed symptoms of Alzheimer’s it started out with not

recognizing people or places. This showed that Alzheimers disease can start out with the

smallest of problems. This interview was published on April 25,2014 on the medical

daily’s website. I plan to use this in the middle of my research paper as a body paragraph

to help add to the topic and give a new point of view that assesses the questions “what is

it like to live with Alzheimers disease?”.
