1229920 Replace the Connecting Rod Bearings According to the Operation and Maintenance Manual SMCS Code: 1219; 1225 Engine: 63606 (SIN: 3XF1-Uip; 42S1-Up) 63608 (SIN: BEN1-Up; 4WF1-Up) 63612 (SIN: BKE1-Up; 1¥G1-Up) 63616 (SIN: 4CG1-Up; BLB1-Up) Field evaluations and laboratory testing of 63600 con- necting rod bearings indicate that carbon deposits can. gradually form on the back side of the lower shell of the rod bearing. These deposits can reduce the heat transfer from the bearing to the rod. This can reduce the oll film thickness between the bearing and the crankshaft. In order to prevent bearing failure, the con- necting rod bearings must be changed at the inter- val that is recommended in the Operation and Mainte- nance Manual. Failure to fellow this recommendation could lead to bearing failure and damage to the crank- shaft Table 1 lists the recommended service hour mainte- nance interval for replacing the connecting rod bear- ings. Refer to the following information. Description Of Change: New cylinder head groups and assemblies are used for all engines that are listed above. The new head groups and assemblies include ritrocarburization of the valve seat inserts on the in- take and exhaust valves. The nitrocarburization coat- ing reduces the recession of the valves. Note: No machining is allowed on the installed valve seat inserts or the coating will be removed. No remanufactured component offer is available for the new parts at this time. Adaptable To: The new basic cylinder head groups and assemblies are now used for top end overhauls and for major overhauls on the engines that are listed above, The new basic cylinder groups and assemblies may be used individually in replacement of the former basic cylinder head groups and assemblies. The for- mer cylinder head groups and the new cylinder head groups are listed in Table 1 and in Table 2. The part numbers of the former valve seat inserts and the new valve seat inserts are listed in Table 3. Table 4 lists 08 September 2008S
