23
Preface
FONYU considers that the safety operation of the press is just as
important as its productivity, therefore, this handbook is make as a guide
for those who operate, service, and supervise the operation of the press.
FONYU does not intend this safety handbook to be a safety code. Our
purpose is to alert press operators, die setters, and press user
management to the importance of establishing safe operating and
maintenance procedure.

Press owner, operators, die setters and maintenance personnel should

recognize the fact that the press safety operation is a vital part of their
jobs. No matter what job activity is involved, prevention of accidents
should be their ultimate purpose.

This handbook is applied to both the stationary and inalienable.

You should make every effort to keep yourpresses safe for production.
Press workers should always observe the "Golden Rule" which is:
"NEVER PLACE YOUR HANDS OR ANY PART OF YOUR BODY
INTO THE DIE AREA UNLESS MAIN DRIVE MOTOR IS
TURNED
OFF,FLYWHEEL HAS STOPPED TURNING, AND SLIDE OR
DIE IS BLOCKED.
This press is designed and constructed in conformity with
the regulations based on the U.S. OCCUPATIONAL
SAFETY.
Where this press is modified, or some of the original equipment are
removed from the press without FONYU's consent, or the press is
operated beyond the limits of the specifications prescribed by FONYU
or where its operation, adjustment, inspection or servicing is not
correctly carried out as indicated in the Machine Manual, FONYU
will not assume responsibility for any troubles or accidents due to any
of the above matters.

24
1. SAFETY OPERATION

1.1 Safety Guide for Press Operation

Many operators place their hands into the die area to increase their
rate of production. Some operators, also, retain their hold on the
unfinished end until it passes into the danger area when feeding stock.

There are some persons who use their hands, instead of a pick, to
remove scrap material or finished part which has stuck in the die.
However,

To place your hand in the die area is very dangerous!

Each item listed below is related to the operator's safety. It is for

your benefit that those procedures are observed.

WARNING

NEVER PLACE YOUR HANDS OR

ANY PART OF YOUR BODY UNDER
THE SLIDE OR WITHIN THE DIE AREA.

25
WARNING

NEVER OPERATE, SERVICE

OR ADJUST THE PRESS, OR
INSTALL DIE, WITHOUT ,il
PROPER INSTRUCTIONS / ..
AND WITHOUT FIRST .II
READING AND
UNDERSTANDING THE
INSTRUCTIONS IN THE /1
SAFETY HANDBOOK AND
MACHINE MANUAL.

Press drive motor must be stopped, flywheel stopped and safety

blocks properly inserted before probing die (with tools) to release the
part which is stuck.

*SAFETY BLOCK: A safety block, used to block

* the slide, is defined in the ANSI Bl1.1-1971
"American National Standard Safety Requirements
For The Construction, Care, and Use of
Mechanical Power Presses" as"-a prop that, when
inserted between the upper and lower dies or
between the bolster plate and the face of the slide,
prevents the slide from falling of its own
deadweight".

FONYU press is provided the interlock method, which automatically

opens the press electrical circuit when safety block is in use.
Whenever workers are required to reach into the point of operation or
other related hazard areas to adjust, repair or set dies, the employer shall
provide and enforce the use of die safety blocks (OSHA regulation. Note
that the use of, and the physical dimensions of a die safety block are
entirely dependent upon the tooling (dies) installed in the press machine

26
WARNING

NEVER RUN PRODUCTION

ON A PRESS WITH STROKING
SELECTOR SET IN THE INCH r It
MODE. INCHING IS A
FUNCTION TO BE USED BY
THE DIE SETTER FOR SETUP
OF DIES AND TOOLING, OR,
FOR MECHANIC'S USE WHEN
CONTROLLED
INTERMITTENT MOTION OF
THE SLIDE IS REQUIRED.

Whenever press has been inoperative or left unattended, even for a

brief moment, the setting of all selector switches should be checked
before starting the machine.

At the beginning of each shift and after every break, cycle the press
several time and observe carefully to be sure that clutch/brake and
controls are functioning properly Also check for proper operation of
other press parts, dies and auxiliary equipment.

WARNING
AT THE BEGINNING OF
-I
. EACH SHIFTS AND AFTER
EVERY BREAK, MAKE
I ] SURE THE SLIDE IS AT
TOP POSITION BY
CHECKING THE CRANK
/ ANGLE INDICATOR.

27
If manual loading or unloading of parts into and out of the die is
required, use always the necessary tools such as safety tongs, vacuum
lifers, pliers or other mechanical devices.
Fingers are precious! Keep all of them by keeping them
clear of danger areas.
Before starting press at the beginning of a shift, or after a
break, check the following items.
" Make certain that safety blocks have not been
left between the dies, or between slide and
bolster.
* Be sure that no tools, nuts, bolts, clamps or
bars were left lying on the press. (Check dies
area, slide, bolster and overhead area.)
* Check visually for workpiece or other
obstruction left in the dies.
" Check all control selector switches to make
certain they are set for desired mode of
operation.

28
Check clutch air
*pressure gauge and
counterbalance for
proper air pressure
setting.

Both pushbutton switches should be checked periodically for proper

and correct operation. The concurrent depression of two pushbuttons is
required to place the slide in motion in INCH, SINGLE or CONT.
mode.

WARNING
BOTH PUSHBUTFON
SWITCHES MUST BE
OPERATIVE AND /
ACTUATED BY THE USE I e
,OF BOTH HANDS. I

29
WARNING

NEVER ATTEMPT TO PULL

A PART OR SCRAP OUT OF
THE DIE WITH YOUR
HANDS. IF A PART STICKS
IN THE DIS, STOP THE /- <
PRESS IMMEDIATELY.

It is the user's responsibility to provide all guards, safety devices, or

tools. When determining how the power press is to be used,
safeguarding the point of operation is of extreme importance. Die guards
must be installed and every opening through which an operator can
insert even a finger into the die area must be eliminated.

WARNING

NEVER REMOVE ANY

POINT OF OPERATION
GUARDS OR DEVICES.

30
Rotary cam limit switches are used for the control of press operation
and they are already adjusted accurately in FONYU factory, therefore,
do not change the cam positions except in case of adjustment by a
responsible person.

WARNING

NEVER ADJUST OR RESET ROTARY

CAM LIMIT SWITCHES EXCEPT BY
A RESPONSIBLE PERSON.

Check reservoir oil level daily. Oil should appear near the level mark
when pump is not running. With pump in operation, oil level may be
lowered, but must always be above the lower level mark.

WARNING

NEVER ADD ANY OIL WHILE

PRESS IS RUNNING

3
31
Voltage that could be fatal to human life is present inside most press
electrical control panels. If necessary to gain access to the inside of a
control enclosure, you must first make certain that incoming power has
been disconnected.

WARNING

NEVER OPERATE THE

PRESS WITH THE DOOR
OF THE CONTROL
PANEL OPEN.

You should not attempt to modify or rework the press electrical control
system.

WARNING

NEVER MODIFY ANY

CONTROL CIRCUITS.

Check slide height to be certain slide is not set too low for the dies in
use at that time. Setting slide too low will increase, considerably, the
load applied to the press.

When changing setting of press controls for a different mode of

operation, make certain selector switches are set correctly then test cycle
the machine to be sure it operates as expected. Authorized persons
should adjust locking type selector switches only and keys removed
after setting to prevent unauthorized change.

Always exhaust air pressure from the die cushion, if used, before
* attempting to remove a jammed part from the die.

32
Shut off power to the press when it is not in use. Lock the control
circuit switch and main switch in the OFF position to prevent
unauthorized use of the press and unintentional start.

WARNING

NEVER STACK PARTS ON THE BOLSTER PLATE OR

NEAR THE DIE AREA OF A PRESS. PARTS STACKED
TOO HIGH COULD CREATE A PINCH POINT AND
THE SLIDE OR DIE COULD BE SERIOUSLY
DAMAGED IF THEY SHOULD HAPPEN TO STRIKE
THIS STACK OF PARTS

0
33
1.2 Safety Guide for Die Setter

Die setters as well as press operators are normally more closely

associated with the actual use of presses than anyone else. It is this
reason that you should develop a sense of personal safety awareness and
understand that by working safely you will be the first to benefit.

It is not only important that dies be installed correctly in the proper

size press, but also, the process must be accomplished in a safe manner.
The job of setting dies is not completed until die guards, and other
necessary point of operation safety devices, are properly installed and
tested.

The following precautions are offered as a guide in the

development of safe die setting procedures.

Do not place your hands or any part of your body under the slide
or within the die area unless main drive motor is turned OFF,
flywheel has stopped turning, and slide is blocked. Check visually to
make certain flywheel has stopped.

WARNING

NEVER INSTALL.
ADJUST, OR REMOVE
DIES, OR SERVICE THE
PRESS WITH THE H
FLYWHEEL IN MOTION f'.
OR MOTOR ON.

34j

34
WARNING

NEVER ATTEMPT TO INSTALL,

ADJUST OR REMOVE DIES WITHOUT
PROPER INSTRUCTIONS AND
WITHOUT FIRST READING AND
UNDERSTANDING THE
INSTRUCTIONS IN THE SAFETY
HANDBOOK, AND MACHINE
MANUAL.

When a die set is being installed in a press, the stroke should be down,
the drive motor shut off, flywheel stopped, and the slide adjustment
positioned high enough to properly clear the die set.

After dies are installed, perform all necessary adjustments before

cycling the press. Be sure the slide height setting is correct.

Clean bolster plate, slide face and dies before installing the die set.
Misalignment caused by dirt, chips of metal or other foreign materials
could result in injury to operator or damage to press and dies. If die
cushion is used, check pressure pinholes in bolster plate to be sure there is
no excessive play.

Check die area, slide, bolster and overhead area to be certain that no
tools, nuts, bolts, clamps or bars were left-before cycling press.

35
The main electrical panel switch should be kept in the OFF position to
prevent unauthorized use of the press and unintentional start.

WARNING

NEVER INSTALL UPPER DIES

EXCEEDING THE WEIGHT
STIPULATED IN THE
MACHINE MANUAL.

If manual loading or unloading of parts into and out of the die is

required, make certain that the necessary tools (safety tongs, vacuum
lifers, pliers or other mechanical devices) are provided for the operator.
The tools must be in good condition.

36
Even though main drive motor is turned off, never install dies or work
under the slide if press flywheel is still turning. Check visually to make

2. MANAGEMENT'S RESPONSIBILITIES

It is the responsibilities of an employer to provide all guards, safety

devices, or tools so those employees can work with or operate the press
safely.

FONYU cannot know what day to day use will be made of a press. In
act, it would be difficult to comprehend the magnitude of potential
applications. It is the press user who determines which dies are going to
be installed, the type of material to be used, the method of loading and
unloading the workpieces, and the type of die guards that will be used
for the job. It is for these reasons that point of operation guards are not
furnished as a part of the original press package. It becomes the
responsibility of the user management to make certain that point of
operation guards and other necessary safety devices are installed which
will make it impossible for press operators to place their hands, or any
other part of their bodies, under the slide or into any other hazardous
area of the machine. The guards must be installed and tested before
releasing machine for production.

Make certain press operators and die setters are properly trained.

Set up a program of daily, weekly and monthly press inspections.

Make a check list and follow through to make certain the job is being
done correctly.

Establish a definite preventive maintenance program with check lists

for each press. Keep a historical record of all press maintenance work,
repairs and adjustments.

Make frequent evaluation checks of all press safety guards and

devices-especially during actual production runs. Correct any unsafe
practices or situations immediately.

38
Provide a clean, safe, uncluttered work area around each press.

Provide safety blocks of the correct size.

Make certain that all mechanical presses and associated equipment

are properly connected to earth ground. Grounding should be in
accordance with the National Electrical Safety Code and consistent with
sound local practices.

Never overload the presses.

39
3. PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT FOR THE MACHINE

* This press is provided with the protective equipment listed below:

3.1 Overload protector or Overload detector

Do not operate the press beyond the capacity prescribed by
the specifications. If overload should be imposed on the press
for some reason, the press would be stopped by means of this
equipment.

WARNING

ADJUSTMENT OF THE OVERLOAD PROTECTOR

OR OVERLOAD DETECTOR TO BE MADE BY
RESPONSIBLE PERSON ONLY.

3.2 Main Motor Thermal Relay

Do not operate the press beyond the specified working
*energy. If overload should be imposed on the press for some
reason, or if overload should occur in the main motor for any
other reason, the over-current would be detected causing the
main motor to stop running.
3.3 Pressure Switch
If the air pressure should drop below the specified minimum
air pressure because of any abnormality in the air, the press
would be placed in an emergency stop by the pressure switch
for safety of operator as well as for prevention of damages of
the press.
In starting the press, the press operation or slide adjustment
cannot be carried out until the air pressure reaches the specified
level.
WARNING

ADJUSTMENT OF THE PRESSURE SWITCH TO

BE MADE BY RESPONSIBLE PERSON ONLY.

4
40
3.4 Dual valve for clutch
Dual valve is provided for the clutch. If one of the solenoid
valves is out of order, the machine is impossible to re-start.

3.5 Brake system

Brake monitor is provided to detect the stopping position of
the press. If the stopping position exceeds 15' of crank angle, a
lamp indicates it.

3.6 Control system

Important parts such as relays and limit switches in the press
operating circuit are doubled. Consequently, if one of these
relays is out of order, the press will be stopped to prevent
restarting of the slide.

3.7 Two hand control

The two-hand control is provided for con current use in
actuation of the press.

3.8 Two RUN pushbuttons

Use the two RUN pushbuttons in a safe position as stipulated
in OSHA 1910, 217, (c), (3), (Vii), (c). (Proper distance from
cut edge from die.)

WARNING

BOTH PUSHBUTITON k_6

SWITCHES MUST BE
OPERATIVE AND
ACTUATED BY THE
USE OF BOTH HANDS.

41
4. USE OF MECHANICAL PRESS

S The importance of using mechanical presses in a thoughtful and

intelligent manner must be recognized-safety of press operators and die
setters is involved, as well as total useful life of the machine.

The mechanical press works by releasing a large energy accumulated in

the flywheel in a very short interval of time. Therefore, the press is
designed and constructed to withstand such a severe operation. An
erroneous operation may cause an instantaneous breakage, damage or
trouble. Even if this erroneous operation does not directly lead to
breakage or troubles, if will have ill effects on the machine life. Thus, the
press must only be operated after full understanding of the following
items.

4.1 Overload
Overload is one of the most significant items to be avoided
among erroneous press operations. Not only overloading the
press, but double-striking of a part, forming of an unannealed
0part, incorrect slide adjustment, etc. must be avoided at all
times.
An overload protector installed in the press can protect any
overload, if it should occur in the press.

4.2Allowable load-stroke relationship

In this press, the revolution of the clutch shaft is converted into
a linear movement of the slide. The clutch transmitting torque
is constant irrespective of a crank angle, but the allowable slide
pressing force is varied by a crank angle.
The relationship is indicated on the allowable load-stroke
diagram and must be observed strictly in operating the press. If
not observed, the press driving parts like the clutch, gears, ect.
may be damaged or broken.
The allowable load-stroke diagram is applied to the work in the
center of slide.

4
42
4.3Allowable eccentric load-distance relationship
The eccentric load in the front to back and the left to right
direction with respect to the press center is limited in addition
to the allowable load described in the preceding paragraph (2).
The allowable eccentric load-relationship is shown on the
specifications that must also be observed.

4.4Working energy
Working energy of the press is determined by the capacities of
main motor and flywheel. Its value is stated in the
specifications. Operation of the press beyond the specified
working energy causes the motor to be damaged.

4.5Number of "SINGLE" strokes

The number of "SINGLE" strokes is determined by the
capacity of clutch-brake and its value is indicated in the
specifications. Operation of the press beyond this specified
number of "SINGLE" strokes causes the clutch-brake linings to
wear excessively and the oil deterioration to be accelerated.

4.6Press foundation
The right foundation is indispensable for minimal vibrations to
be transmitted to the base, prevention of overturning of the
press in an earthquake and for maintaining the machine
accuracy. The press must be erected on the correct foundation,
observing precautions in the specifications.

43
5. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

The following matters should be observed to prevent injury or a fatal

accident on operators.

5.1 This press is provided with the following devices and components,
as safety measures are its operation.
Do not remove, modify or change their control circuits to prevent
their functional deterioration.
" Overrun detector
* Motion detector
" Dual solenoid valve
* Pressure switch for clutch • Balance
* Safety control circuit (NON-CONTACT CONTROLLER)
" Key lock
" Safety plug
" Detector of clutch valve fault
* Die area guard

5.2Do not operate the press with any portion of operator's body within a
dangerous area such as under the slide in a die, etc.. Dies should be
designed in conformity with the "TECHNICAL GUIDANCE FOR
SAFETY STANDARD OF DIES". When there is a possibility of
dangerous objects to fly over due to die breakage and any other
trouble in a cold forming, thick plate blanking operations, etc., a
proper guard should be installed. In such a case, please contact
FONYU directly.

5.3Do not change or adjust a die or service the press while the flywheel
is in motion. When making such an operation, you must be sure to
move the control power switch key to OFF and take the key out of
the switch.

44
5.4 Before operation of the press, confirm the notched position for
elector switch with key "OPERATION".

5.5 Do not make any modification on safety device and control circuit
provided for the press.

5.6 Be sure to make such correct "OPERATION" "ADJUSTMENT"

and the "PERIODICAL INSPECTION AND SERVICING" as
described in this machine manual. (Refer to F-l)

5.7 Do not operate the press, if the driving mechanism, a safety device
or a safety control circuit is out of order. Carry out servicing
correctly according to the "TROUBLE SHOOTING GUIDE" in this
machine manual. FONYU genuine parts should be used as
replacement parts.

5.8Do not operate the press with the main control box door left open.
After making sure the door screwed, operate the press.

0 5.9Do not operate the press with the rotary cam dnve unit, flywheel,
etc., remaining uncovered.

5.10 Do not operate the press beyond the specified data or working
capacity given in this machine manual.

5.11 "INCH" control should be operated in die spotting works only. Do

not operate the press under ordinary press works in "INCH"
operation.
FONYU is always studying operational safety for presses. Please
contact FONYU for inquiry about the latest information on our
press technology and techniques.

5.12Only one operator can operate this press machine. If two-hand trip
systems are used on multiple operator presses, each operator shall
have a separate set of controls.

MAIN V.S. MOTOR

EDDY
"I T Il CURRENT MOTOR,
OPERATING PRINCIPLE OF ED MOTORS
If a U-magnet, which can freely rotate about the axis
of a Metal Disc as shown in Fig 1, holds a Metal
Disc (rotating on its own axis) between its poles by I Direclion of eddy
leaving a space for free rotation, it will rotate in the current Axis

same direction as the Disc The operation of the ED vCDirection of rotation

of metal disc
motor is an application of this pnnciple (Arago
F, Direction oV
Effect) The Drum and the Inductor Assembly El•tromagnetic
correspond to the metal Disc and the U-magnet Force
respectively
melal disc
S
When the Drum isrotated counter-clockwise by an FO Unmgmel
electnc motor and a direct current is passed through
* the excitation coil, adjacent projections of the
Inductor Assembly become alternately the north pole
and the south pole and eddy-currents pass through the
Drum as shown in Fig 2 Electromagnetic force

current as the parameter, becomes greater as the <3= Direction of drum rotation
excitation current becomes greater with a 4- Direction of inductor rotation
corresponding decrease in the number of rotations of
the output shaft Since the ED motor speed
fluctuates considerably with any load torque changes,
* a speecon control panel isused to minimise these
speed fluctuations

TORQUE CHARACTERISTICS OF ED MOTORS:

The output torque of ED motors transmitted from

* the Prime Mover to a Driven Load is at any moment
the same as that of the Prime Mover Therefore,
ED motors provide an adjustable speed drive of

CONTROL PRINCIPLE OF ED MOTORS:

The Tacho-Generator on the ED motor shaft will produce a voltage (EI) in proportion to the output
speed of the ED motor This voltage (El) will then be compared with the speed preset voltage (E2)
of the Speecon Control panel which will automatically regulate the current of the exciting coil of the
ED coupling The ED motor is thus maintained at its predetermined speed

SPEECON APPLIED SERIES

(JVEP) These units are designed to manually adjust the running speed of E D
MANUAL CONTROLLER Motors by their speed setting rheostat

(JVTA) This unit converts an output current of PID controllers into a proper
OPERATIONAL AMPLIFIER input signal D C voltage as a speed command for E D drives

(JVMR) JVMR is used to set the master speed, and JVTR used on ratio control
(JVTR) or sequence interlock
control
RANGE DRIVERS
This unit prevents circuit devices and process line from being sub-
(JVTQ) ected to undesired electrical or mechanical shock when a rapid speed
TIME STARTER controlled signal such as 'start' or 'stop' is applied, and converts a
signal of a short time limit into one of a long time limit
(JVTK) This unit converts the load current, detected from the E D driving
CURRENT DETECTOR motor, into D C Voltage suitable for E D regulator, hence we can
utilize it as torque control
(JVMID) These units convert mechanical deflection amount, which is detected
DISPLACEMENT DETECTOR
(JVTD) as A C Voltage by synchro for detection of rotating angle, into signal
DEFLECTION DETECTOR amount in the form of D C voltage suitable for E D motor regulator
This unit is most suitable where other controllers might encounter
MOTOR-OPERATED SPEED with induction interference, because of relatively long distance (1km

SETTIING RHEOSTAT and above) between controller and E D motor regulator, or where
operation is made from two or more different places.

1.GENERAL

The KOSMEK Overload Protector has been developed for protecting the press and
the die by immediately shutting down press operation and releasing pressing force
0 when accidental overloading takes place
KOSMEK engineenng team analyzed the ideal overload protector to satisfy the
following conditions and designed the Model PL Series

(1) The devices should be durable enough to withstand stock acceleration up to 70 G

which is expected to be applied by blanking operation

(2) Tripping Accuracy

The overload tripping level should be within 10% over full range of overloading
stroke. Namely, even if the overloading stroke point is changed, overloading
tngger should be actuated always at the same tonnage, actually within 10%

(3) Response Time

When the overload protector is triggered, pressing energy should be released and
the limit switch should shut down press operation instantaneously This response
time should be less than I milli-second (1/1,000 sec

(4) Size & Weight

0 For Mounting on the press ram, compact and light weight design is required

(5) Operation
Adjustment of the overload tripping pressure should be easy

4. SELECTION OF MODEL

4-1 Model No.

(I) Determination of Air Pressure (Pa)
a)The operation air pressure should be lower than available air pressure in the
shop
b) When air is obtained from the air supply source for the clutch brake and the
balancer, the pressure is determined by the air supply source
(2) Overload Trigger Capacity (Cp)
Cp = Press Rated Capacity X (1 0-1 2)
Usually 1 1(10% up) is recommended
(3) Overload Trigger Pressure (Ph)
Ph = Overload Trigger Capacity (kg f) = C ------- (1)
Overload Cylinder Area (cm2) A

Ph = Air Pressure (Pa) X (50/60/70 times) ------------------- (2)

a) Ph should be calculated by above equations (1)and (2)

b) Air pressure should be as higher as possible.
c) Overload trigger pressure (Ph) should be selected as higher as possible
(example 350 kgf/cm2 )
d) It is beneficial to standardize pressure of all the presses

* (4) Flow Rate Check for Overload Protector

The flow rate of the overload cylinder should be less than that of the overload
protector

(3) Pies and holes in which oil flows should be made as big as possible and
radius of bending should also be made as large as possible to reduce flowing
resistance

(4) Cutting chips, rust, dust, and any foreign particle should be stmctly kept away
from piping material and hydraulic equipment at the time of assembly or
installation. Sharp edge and burrs must be filed and cleaned by proper agent,
such as chrole solvent or acid fluid, and sufficiently flushed before operation

4-7 Pressure Switch and Electrical Circuit

(1) A pressure switch with 3 working positions is employed

Refer to the description on theory of operation for details
(2) Circuit design should be made to stop air supply by turning off the air-
solenoid valve at the same time when the press is shut down by switching off
the contact No 13-14 (for high pressure) 1/1,000 sec After the overload
triggering
(3) After triggering the overload circuit, the press ram should be raised up to top
of the stroke by inching operation.
The air-solenoid is turned on at top of the stroke, then the pump is operated
to apply pre-Load, which makes the contact No 21-22 of the pressure switch
turn on
(4) Resetting of the overload protector system is completed when the pressure
switch is turned on The press is ready for normal operation

5. CAUTION FOR ASSEMBLING AND TEST OPERATION

0 5-1 Caution for Assembling Press Slide

5-2 Air Bleeding of Pump

(1) Supply oil in the oil reservoir tank

(2) Turn the air bleeder valve screw anti-clockwise for one turn and loosen it by
means of an allen-wrench (6mm hex-head wrench) It is marked with "AIR
BLEED VALVE"
(3) Operate the pump
(4) The pump starts to operate from light high-cycle operational sound and turn
into strong low-cycle sound, then air bleeding is completed If air bleeding is
not completed (oil does not come out from the valve) even after one minute,
air supply should be turned on and off repeatedly

5-3. Air Bleeding of Overload Cylinder

Set the air pressure of the balancer circuit of the press (over balanced condition)
and then air bleeding should be performed in the following procedures
(1) Operate the pump and supply oil to the overload cylinder
(2) Stop the pump and turn the air bleeding valve of the overload cylinder for
one turn to return the oil in the overload cylinder to the oil tank
(3) Fasten the air bleeding valve
Repeating above procedures (1) and (2) for 3 to 4 times can complete air
bleeding

* 5-4 Test Operation of Overload Protector

(1) Jack-up Testing

Push-up the press ram by means of the hydraulic jack and check if the
overload protector is activated If jack-upping speed is too slow, oil leakage
from the oil relief valve would prevent the overload protector from
functioning

(2) Test Operation by Press

Trigger the overload protector by pressing the dummy plate. Lower the ram
by the slide adjust little by little and repeat the overload testing until it is
triggered at the rated press capacity

Purpose and mode of functioning of the clutch/brake combined
unit.
Single plate clutch/brake combined units are well suited for high
torques even where the thermal loading is high, e g in the
accelerating and deceleration of heavy gyrating masses with
high engaging/disengaging frequencies They are used above
all in presses and guillotine shears
Do not use clutch/brake combined units in rooms with high air
humidity or in which the air contains oil Otherwise there is
the risk that the plates will slip and the action of the brake will
be significantly reduced

Braking: Spnngs 5/6 press against the piston 2 in the cylinder

1.2. The piston 2 pulls the pressure plate 7 with brake plate 14
against the fnction surfaces of the hub 1.1 by means of the
bolts 8/9 and screws 11, thus activating the brake

Engaging the clutch : Compressed air is applied to the piston

via air intake A. This causes brake plate 14 to be released and
clutch plate 13 to engage
The normal operating pressure is 5 5 bar, the maximum
permissible pressure 6 bar Never operate the clutch/brake
combined unit with a higher pressure since this can lead to
the risk of the cylinder breaking
OAlways use dustfree, dry compressed air (a maintenance unit
is required)
0 *Set the oiler of your maintenance unit so that it delivers
from I to 2 drops of oil per m' air
Olt is essential that the friction linings are kept free of oil

Maintenance

Check during operation of the clutch/brake combined unit

Check the wear at the air gap between the clutch plate/friction
block and the piston As the fnction linings wear down, the
braking time increases

When the air gap has become equal to the maximum

permissible friction lining wear (see table below), you must
change the plates/friction blocks Check in each case the
friction lining counter surfaces for wear or sconng (request
technical service if necessary)

,?

To prevent this type of damage, check the air gap between the
clutch plate/friction block and the piston regularly Do this when
the brake is applied
