Hydrocarbon exploration and extraction in Corfu

In the light of recent developments on Block 2, west of Corfu island, and the granting of
hydrocarbon exploration and extraction rights to the consortium of Total, Edison and Hellenic
Petroleum (ELPE) in March 2017, a small historical retrospective of the research in the region
seems appropriate.
It is well-known that one of the possible oil-bearing areas of Greece is the North Ionian Sea. The
North Ionian Sea was studied through two boreholes carried out in 1962 by ESSO and in 1983 by
AGIP in Paxoi islands, as well as through four boreholes carried out by the Public Petroleum
Corporation (DEP) in 1978-82 in the area of Corfu. Furthermore, 2D land and marine seismics
were carried out in the same place at the same time by DEP. The result of this research was
significant evidence of gas and oil that led scientists to the conclusion that there is an active oil
system in the area (i.e. source rocks, reservoirs, traps and cap rocks).
The research did not prove the existence of exploitable hydrocarbon deposits in the area, but
showed the existence of unexplored areas with a possible oil-bearing geological environment
(financially attractive). Although further geological research in the North Ionian Sea would
undoubtedly be necessary, the research work stopped abruptly in the mid-1990s.
The encouraging results of these early studies are supported by the fact that since it belongs to
the Adriatic and Apulian zone, the North Ionian Sea is characterized by geological systems similar
to those of Albania and Italy, which are oil producing countries, as they have exploitable
hydrocarbon deposits.
In 2011 the Greek state launched a competition for non-exclusive seismic survey on the marine
regions of the Ionian Sea and south of Crete island. Out of the eight companies that expressed
interest, PGS, the seismic company from Norway, was chosen as the project contractor. PGS’s
geophysical research vessel, Nordic Explorer, after almost four months of continuous navigation
(launched in November 2012) and 12,431 kilometers of new geophysical data (obtained using an
innovative PGS technology that minimizes noisy data and facilitates more specific and more
thorough search), completed its research and returned to the port of Patras at the end of
February 2013.
The data of the complex geophysical research that was carried out were described as very good
by the executive vice president of Petroleum Geo-Services, while the then Minister of
Environment, Energy and Climate Change, Yannis Maniatis, stated that “from the preliminary
data assessment were found interesting geological structures that resemble similar structures in
regions already producing hydrocarbons in neighboring countries (Italy and Albania).” The
interpretation of the data that took place in the following months pointed out the most attractive
areas in terms of oil capacity, including Paxoi and the sea area northwest of Corfu (as well as
Greece’s maritime boundaries with Albania).
The subsoil of the region of Corfu and of the Ionian Sea in general may be significantly rich, but
we are obliged to take the environmental and economic costs of a potential accident into
account, while taking all the necessary measures for the protection of the environment and
making the most appropriate decision for the future of the local people.

ATLAS OF LAVRION MINERALS
-Lavrion (Lavreotiki) is one of the Earth's best "Laboratories" of Mineralogy. Its history is lost in Antiquity
and there are thousands of collectors and numerous Museums that have samples from Lavrion. New
minerals are being added to the known list of mineral species from Lavrion. The idea is to upload
beautiful images of Lavrion minerals to the site of IACLM in facebook,
https://www.facebook.com/groups/115645832341118/ ,and after gathering the so-called Lavrion
mineralogical species, we believe that it can be proposed to an International Publishing House, for
example. Elsevier, Springer-Verlag GmbH, etc. to fund and publish a monumental scientific work in
Mineralogy: The illustrated ATLAS OF LAVRION MINERALS which will surely become a best-seller
worldwide. This project will also include the names of all collectors, museums, educational institutes,
organizations etc. that will contribute with excellent quality photographs from their collection to the
site of the International Association of Collectors of Minerals of Lavrio. With this thinking you can
continue to upload mineral photos of Lavrion specimens with exact description and dimensions. So
everyone can follow the path of the first of the two projects we have announced. The dream will come
true if everyone helps.

-Kornerupine usually have a green to blue-green or brownish-green to greenish-brown or yellow-brown
to brownish-yellow color with strong pleochroism. Rarely are blue specimens. Recently, however, the
authors of this brief information had at their disposal a set of four rough stones and a faceted cut
specimen from Tanzania.
