ABSTRACT

Thesis Title: The Implications of Language Barrier to the Social


Interaction among Indigenous Communities in 2nd District of Oriental
Mindoro

Jaymer M. Labaguis

This study aimed to determine the perception of respondents in the

implications of language barrier to the social interaction among indigenous

communities in 2nd district of Oriental Mindoro , wherein it several ethnicities namely:

Bicolano, Bisaya, Ilocano, Tagalog and Waray and pronunciation difficulties which

includes medium of communication, letter-sound recognition and word stress.

The respondents of the study were eighty-three (83) purposively selected by the

researchers to address the necessity of the study. Then, the descriptive method was

used to achieve the goal of this study. The statistical tools that has been utilized

includes Weighted Arithmetic Mean, Pearson’s R formula and Analysis of Variance.

And reliability, the researchers conducted test-retest method to ten (10) respondents.

Based on the results, the set of questionnaire is reliable.

Furthermore, based on the result of the gathered data, the overall weighted mean

of the perception of pronunciation difficulty in term of medium of communication is

3.00 (sometimes) ; the overall weighted mean in term of letter-sound recognition is

3.50 (often) and the overall weighted mean in term of word stress is 3.90 (agree). As

the answer to the hypothetical question, the researchers concluded that there is a

significant relationship between the ethnicity and pronunciation difficulty in


pronunciation of English Language in selected public secondary school in Bansud

District, Oriental Mindoro. And, recommendations were made for the improvement of

students’ pronunciation in English Language and for other researchers who may use

it.
