Patients with end-stage kidney disease who undergo hemodialysis

often experience thirst. In order to reduce thirst for patients undergoing
hemodialysis, patients can chew low-sugar gum and suck on ice crystals.
This study aims to determine the difference in the effectiveness of chewing
low-sugar gum and sucking ice cubes on decreasing thirst in patients with
chronic renal failure undergoing hemodialysis. This is a quasi-experimental
design with two groups pre-test-post test design, consisting of 34 samples
which were divided into 2 groups; 17 people in the gum group and 17
people on the group of crystal ice. The results of the study before chewing
gum low sugar showed that those experiencing thirst were 14 people
(82.4%) and those who felt very thirsty were 3 people (17.6%), while
before doing ice cubes, those experiencing thirst were 16 people (94.1%)
and those who feel very thirsty are 1 person (5.9%). After giving low-sugar
chewing gum, those experiencing less thirst were 14 people (82.4%) and
those who did not lose thirst were 3 people (17.6%), whereas after doing
ice-suction, it was found that they felt the thirst decreased were 16 people
(94.1%), and those who did not decrease thirst was 1 person (5.9%).
Mann Whitney test results showed that there was a difference between the
effectiveness of chewing low sugar gum and sucking ice cubes on a
decrease in thirst where sucking ice cubes was more effective than
chewing low sugar gum with p value 0,000. Chilling ice cubes is more
effective in reducing thirst compared to chewing low sugar gum. The
research is expected to be able to increase knowledge and insight for
sufferers of chronic kidney failure in dealing with thirst.
