Note: Attempt any FIVE questions. All questions carry equal marks
Q.1 (a) Prove that if a / x (a divides x),then a / x  x where a & x are integers.
(b) prove that if a / b & a / c then “a” will divides the linear combination of b & c.
(c) Prove the transitive property of divisibility.

Q.2 (a) Find the number of positive integers  2076 & divisible neither by 4 nor by 5.
(b) Every composite number “n” has a prime factor  n
(c) Find six consecutive integers that are composite.

Q.3 (a) Let (a,b)=d then (i) (a/d,b/d)=1


(ii) (a,a-b)=d
(b) The g.c.d of two positive integers a & b is a linear combination of a & b.

Q.4 (a) State & prove Wilson’s theorem.


(b) Let “p” be a prime such that p/ a n then p n / a n

Q.5 (a) Define linear diophatine equation & find its general solution.
(b) Find the general solution of 170x-455y=625.

Q.6 (a) If a  b(mod m1),a  b(mod m2),………….a  b(mod mk), then a  b

(b) State & prove Chinese remainder theorem for system of linear congruences.

Q.7 (a) Let  be a primitive root modulo an odd prime “p”, then Ord p (  +p)  p-1

(b) If  be a primitive root modulo an odd prime then either  or  +p is a primitive

Q.8 (a) Let “m: be a positive integer with a primitive root  , and a,b be positive integers
relatively prime to m, then
1) ind  (1)  0(mod  (m) )
2) ind  (ab)=ind  (a )  ind  b (mod  (m) )
(b) Solve the congruence 8 x 5  3(mod13) using indices.

Q.9 (a) Define quadratic residues.Find quadratic residues & non-residues of p=13.
(b) Every odd prime p has exactly (p-1)/2 quadratic residues and (p-1)/2 quadratic non-
residues.

Q.10 (a) State & prove Guass lemma.
