I AM THE GUY THEY CALLED “DEEP-THROAT”

 Deep Throat is an alias used by a certain person who leaked the key details of Nixon’s
Watergate cover-up to Washington Reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein
 John D. O’connor- author of this piece to the Vanity Fair. This piece is about W. MARK FELT-
who is number 2 in the FBI in the early 70s, finally admitting that he is the infamous DEEP
THROAT after decades of anonymity.
 June 17, 1972- FIVE burglars were caught breaking into the headquarters of Democratic
National Committee at the Watergate complex, along the Potomac River. Two members of the
team were found to have address books with scribbles "W. House" and "W.H." They were
operating, as it turned out, on the orders of E. Howard Hunt, a onetime C.I.A. agent who had
recently worked in the White House, and G. Gordon Liddy, an ex–F.B.I. agent who was on the
payroll of the Committee to Re-elect the President (CRP, pronounced Creep, which was
organizing Nixon's run against Senator George McGovern, the South Dakota Democrat). Funds
for the break-in, laundered through a Mexican bank account, had actually come from the coffers
of CRP, headed by John Mitchell, who had been attorney general during Nixon's first term.
Following the break-in, suspicions were raised throughout Washington: What were five men
with Republican connections doing with gloves, cameras, large amounts of cash, and bugging
equipment in the Democrats' top campaign office?
 the author had a daughter and her friend named Nick Jones went to their house and related to
Nick the story of his father who is an undercover FBI agent in Rio. Nick told him that his
grandfather was an agent of the FBI too and that his lolo’s name was Mark Felt.
 Joan Felt- daughter of mark, (mother of Nick) was completing her chores on a morning of
AUGUST 1999 when someone came knocking in their door and introduced himself as BOB
WOODWARD- when she told his father, his father immediately told the reporter to come in and
they went out for a drink together. Confused, the daughter wondered that it was unusual of her
father to respond to the visits of reporters.
 Felt was already on a fragile age (more or less 90) when he talked to the author. He was hesitant
at first of revealing his identity as deep throat, because he believed that he is no hero in leaking
confidential information of the president to the reporters even though it was done with a good
cause. However, he wanted to reveal himself before he dies.
 According to him, he and Woodward would exchange signals in order to meet with each other
without suspensions, Woodward would put a flaglet in pot in the window of his apartment if he
wanted to talk with Felt and Felt would draw hands of a clock on page 24 on the newspaper to
be delivered before 7am on Woodward’s house. They would meet in an isolated carpark.
 He narrated how the president did his best to cover-up his involvement in the Watergate
incident and he even used his powers as the president to prevent people inside the government
to findout or to talk about their involvement.
