EXAMPLE 20 – Tank with headers

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION
The TNK unit operation module simulates a storage tank.

The TNK module can be used to design a tank or simulate an existing

tank.

Problem Solution
1. The user should click on the Model Parameters Button .
A window appears with a number of clickable tabs.

2. Click the Calc Options Tab where the Mass Balance Option
should be turned on.

3. In Calc Parameters set the units of Mass and Time to KG/Hr .

4. Next the user should enter the COMPONENT DATABASE

menu and select Water aqueous.

5. Next the FLOWSHEET should be entered and setup as show

above in the flowsheet diagram.

6. UNIT OPERATION DATA

NOTE: Streams 91 to 97 would have controls on them setting their flowrates. To save having to enter five
Flowrate Controllers in this example we will just enter their flowrates but understand they would normally be
controlled elsewhere in the flowsheet.

7. INPUT STREAM DATA
Stream 1 Stream 93

Stream 2 Stream 94

Stream 3 Stream 96

Stream 91 Stream 97
500 Kg/Hr ................. H2Oaq .. 100% 900 Kg/Hr .................H2Oaq . 100%

Stream 92

97 97 900.000 0.000000 900.000

After viewing the results change the flowrate for Stream 1 to 5000 Kg/Hr and run the Calculations again.

As the flowrate in Stream 1 is now sufficient to supply the flowrate requirements of the Headers the Tank
will shut down the Make Up Stream and Bleed the excess out the Overflow, O/F stream.
