Chilled Beam Examples - Passive and Active

This space is an open office area designed for 26 occupants, 26 computers with an
LCD monitor, a projector, 3 printers, T8 florescent lighting, and has a control
temperature of 75°F at 50% RH. The room is 50 ft wide, 50 ft long, and 9 ft from floor
to ceiling. The ceiling exposed, with duct connections possible in the interior of the
space.
The assumptions made for the space are as follows:
 Load per person is 250 BTU/h sensible and 200 BTU/h latent
 Lighting load in the space is 6.82 BTU/h/ft²
 Computer load is 308 BTU/h (CPU and LCD Monitors)
 The projector load is 188 BTU/h
 The printer load is 444 BTU/h each
 Conduction through the window and wall is 14.6 BTU/h/ft²
 Infiltration is minimal, and for the purposes of this example is neglected

 The specific heat and density of the air or this example will be 0.24 BTU/lb°F
and 0.075 lb/ft³ respectively.
Note: Some local codes may not allow the discount for VE, or may have stricter requirements,
and they should be used instead of this calculation. Example: Title 24 in California.

Active Chilled Beam Selection = Acutal load/ Load

Determine the Load Requirements ASHRAE X ahu air as
per ASHREAE 62.1
A minimum airflow of 620 CFM is required and the total sensible load to be absorbed with the
active chilled beam is

Nothing but CFMx0.68x

Determine the Active Chilled Beam size and Quantity

From the performance data:

The beam selection should be base on the CFM requirements, sensible load requirements and
minimizing the quantity of beams on the job site. For this space the ideal beam is 16 2-way 5’
beams, and it has been highlighted in green.

Determine the Flow Rate

From the performance data:

2 -way 5’ beam—0.87 gpm and 0.93’ of head

16 x 0.87 = 13.92 gpm

The system should be sized to supply 13.92 gpm at a minimum of 0.93’ of head when in a
parallel configuration. For sizes outside of the cataloged data, please contact your local Price
representative.
