MODULE 4

THE STUDENT CHARACTERISTIC

A learning process will take place effectively or not, it is determined by how the teacher
understand about the character of their student. The student characteristic is the identity of
student to describe the student condition, for example the student learning style, social
economic condition. It is very important for teacher to identify and understand about student
learning achievement , learning activity and the right assessment for student.

In our classroom our student come from different background, gender, ethnic, age, culture,
social economic and learning interest.

1. Gender : in non-homogeneous classrooms consisting of female and male students, of


course they have different characteristics, according to them, male students are a little
concerned with what female students convey while female students pay more attention
to what is conveyed by male students, according to suprayekti female and male students
have similarities and differences. the difference in physiological, biological, roles,
behaviors, activities and attributes, while the similarities are rights and obligations.
2. Ethnic : if our classroom is heterogeneous, there are some ethnic for example java,
Sumatra, so it is more difficult to handle than homogeny class, as a teacher we have to
find a good way, so that the learning process can running well, for example we have to
use Indonesian for language that we use in the class.
3. Age : age differences in students influence the learning approach, methods, media and
types of evaluations that students use .
4. Culture : Our students may come from various regions who certainly have different
cultures so that our class is a multicultural class. a teacher must be able to uncover the
cultural diversity that exists in our school, to give an example in delivering learning
material, it is necessary for us to consider the diversity so that what we tell can be
accepted by students.
5. Social status :
Student with different social economy status should be able to interact and do each
other’s learning process.
6. Student interest :
The interest of students play a very important role, therefore it should be improve
PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

Prior knowledge is the knowledge the learner already has before they get new information. The
prior knowledge have the important role in learning process.

The advantages to identify students’ prior knowledge.

1. The teacher must understand how the structure and function of student’s prior
knowledge is connected during the learning process.
2. Recognition of students’ prior knowledge is one of the important variable in determine
the harmony of learning process.
3. The prior knowledge also used not only in learning process but also to improve the
meaningful learning.

The kinds of student prior knowledge

1. Intellectual skill (Discrimination; concrete concept; the use of role; and problem
solving;
2. Cognitive strategy (record, making analysis and synthesis);
3. Verbal information (fact, principle, name generation);
4. Attitude (positive and negative);
5. Psychomotor (speed,accuracy).

THE STUDENT LEARNING STYLE

There are three different type of student learning style.

1. Visual
The student is prefer to see information and to visualize the relationships between idea.
They learn best when information is presented to them visually. for example; symbol,
picture. The visual student starts their lesson material and then go to specific
explanation. So, as a teacher we have to give them charts, graphics, make your
presentation highly visual and show the relationships between your various points.
2. Auditory
Prefer to hear info rather than reading it or seeing it displayed visually. They like to
recite the information out load to remember it so, as a teacher we have to give them a
change to repeat your points back to you by asking questions and calling for students’
answer.
3. Kinesthetic.
They like to applied.
Sprinkle in a few exercises that get your students to stand up and move around in order
to demonstrate or experience certain points. For example: role play we can also ask
them to write thing down in order to remember.
