Reading/Writing: 86 Behavior: Very Satisfactory

II. Descriptive Evaluation

Subject: Grammar

There would always be a lot of energy and passion to learn something new and
interesting; to express ideas and viewpoints; to ask and sometimes even argue on some
rules in grammar, in life and in faith where Joseph Tuan is concerned.
This is an attitude that has facilitated English learning for him—spoken or written the
medium may be.

Grammar (Speaking)
Tuan is spontaneous. He is not inhibited to open his mouth and make a
comprehensible sound to articulate his ideas. His structure has good foundation,
but very much wanting for an opportunity to be honed and perfected. Thus, it has
been good for him. His ventures to formulate structured sentences have been
most helpful in reiterating the value of practice and the advantage of a rich stock
of vocabulary in English.
He needs, however to temper his sometimes very passionate stance on things as
this could be unhealthy in the conduct of friendly exchanges in the class among
peers.
His sound production is very good. There is just a need to work more on his
stress, accents, and intonation patterns.

Grammar (Writing)
There is a tendency that Tuan’s writing could be very wordy. This is
understandable as he is experimenting and perhaps trying out new words he has
recently acquired. He has to appreciate compactness and brevity in a written
work. He still has lapses in his SV agreements, his Verb Tenses, and in the use of
Prepositions and Articles.
More writing opportunities that will make use of Standard English structures
would be most helpful for him.

Tuan has a long way to go. He has gone far already even with his short stint in the
Language Center. Kudos.

Grammar Teacher

Subject: Reading/Writing

A. FLUENCY IN READING
Joseph’s reading skill is intermediate except for his confusion with some words in
which he needs more improvement. Joseph is good in getting the important information
and understands the instructions given. He is able to gather the data needed. In addition,
the teacher believes that he knows well how to meet his own needs and that he is capable
of improving even by himself. He is able to interpret, analyze or assess the data or
assigned reading. The learner’s outcome can be very positive if he gives more attention to
his weaknesses in communication which can be easily corrected. However, Joseph needs
to be more sensitive to his other colleagues when giving answering as he sometimes
manipulates, unconsciously, the flow of the class, thus giving others lesser time or chance
to speak.

B. WRITING
Joseph’s writing skill is very good and flexible if given different contexts. However,
he showed some laziness in some assigned homework and needs to be persuaded. It
would be good if he realizes that he has good potentials in writing and narrating his ideas

2
almost vividly as when he speaks. He is also good in nuancing the terms used. Also he
exhibits good comprehension skills both in reading and listening so he writes well,
getting the main point in the assigned tasks.

Subject: Speaking and Listening

Joseph(Tuan) has displayed qualities which are most essential and promising in learning
the English language. His grasp of the spoken aspect of the language as well as the
listening part, in the span of a month and a half since he enrolled after almost three weeks
after the first cycle started, developed quite steadily and consistently. Early on, Joseph
showed confidence in doing all the drills in the class. Moreover, he was able to
articulately express himself in class, asking the most number of questions during
discussions on various topics. Although he commited recurring errors in enunciating
some consonants such as /s/ and /sh/, and vowels such as the different variants of /a/, he
persisted until he was able to articulate them accurately. Despite these concerns, Joseph
can be considered as one of the top students in class.

He is a critical thinker, able to apply logic and rational thinking in every speech he
delivered in front of his classmates. Furthermore, because Joseph is a natural leader, he
led his team during classroom debate matches.

He has participated enthusiastically in every activity that was given to him in class. This
same enthusiasm is also the reason for his fast progress as he was able to maintain that
positive disposition when it comes to learning the English language.

This assessment qualified him Very Satisfactory assessment that measured his language
competency in Spoken English.
