Staff, Newsweek. “Cheerleading Gains Popularity Worldwide.” Newsweek, 13 Mar. 2010,

www.newsweek.com/cheerleading-gains-popularity-worldwide-101645

• Countries like china are getting serious about cheerleading now

• When the Worlds (big cheer competition) first opened the competition to foreign teams
two years ago only three came, two from Colombia and one from New Zealand.
• When china first went to the worlds, they didn’t make it past the preliminary rounds
because the routine wasn’t “cheerleading” the judges said is was more of a “cultural
dance”.
• Cheerleading has grown so much that USASF created an International All-Star
Federation
• 52 countries are apart of the USASF program now
• One reason why is because of movies that air internationally and feature cheerleader like
“bring it on’
• Seeing cheerleaders on TV and in movies make it more appealing to other countries
• “NFL teams' bringing along cheerleaders when they play exhibition games overseas, and
you get a wave of kids attracted to modern cheerleading's athleticism and élan.”
(Newsweek staff)
• Canada and Mexico have been having good all-star teams for years now because of how
close they are to the united states.
• A team in Canada (great white sharks) even has its own shows like some American cheer
gyms (cheer extreme or California all-stars) do today.
• For other countries like Australia it has recently started growing because of boosters.
• In France cheer is just picking up, they started this year by sending a team to worlds
competition, but it didn’t end well for them.
• China has been known as the most aggressive country when competing compared to the
other ones not including united states.
• “Beijing is promoting cheer in schools, inviting American coaches to run clinics and
creating cheer majors and scholarships at sports universities.” (Newsweek staff)
• At worlds foreign team tend to watch and study the elite American teams to see how they
can improve on their routine.
• Over the next few years people are expecting for foreign teams to start getting on the
same level as American teams.
• One way to show that is Nanning middle school from china finished 5th this year at
worlds this article
This article was mainly about how other countries are starting to take All-star cheerleading more
serious like Americans do.

Dill, Vicki. “School Cheer vs. All Star Cheer.” Cheerleading, 12 Apr. 2016,

www.flocheer.com/articles/5050523-school-cheer-vs-all-star-cheer

• Its hard to do school cheer and competitive cheer because they are two completely
different things.
• School cheer can be good if you want to be involved in school activities and attend every
sports event
• The other pro-sides of cheering in school is that it shows you’re involved in school
activities on your transcripts
• Also, a great way to make friends in school
• School cheer is not as big of a time requirement as competitive cheer
• School cheerleading is great preparation for college cheerleading
• School cheerleading is also not as expensive as competitive cheerleading
• Physically school cheering leading is easier on the athlete rather than competitive
cheerleading
• Competitive cheer teams have practices at least three times a week for a minimum of two
hours
• Competitive cheerleading has five to six competitions a year while school cheer has three
• School cheer you will learn multiple cheer routines throughout the whole school year
rather than just one
• You’ll be good at time management from so many practices.
• Competitive cheer main objective is to compete and are dedicated to practicing and
performing.
• In an all-star gym you can find many different types of coaches such as a tumbling coach,
stunting coach and a choreographer.
• The coaches for a high school cheerleading program are usually pulled from teachers and
they can have an additional coach or an advisor.
• All-star cheerleading is on spring floor where as high school cheer in on hard floor which
is just a thin mat with no spring.
• Competitive cheer you do it as a sport itself where as school cheerleading you are
cheering for a sport.
• School cheer season is from a\August- June
• Competitive cheerleading is from April- March
• Both types of cheerleading will consist of stunts, jumps, tumbling and a dance
• School cheerleading will use pom-poms and have a cheer or a chant in the routine as well
while they perform.
The number one difference between school cheer and competitive is school cheer is cheering for
other teams whereas competitive you compete for your team.
