Unit 1: Numbers and Number Concepts

Grades: 10 and 11 Dates: 19 - 20 classes Feb 1 - March 7/8 Teacher: Ringuette

Overview Question(s): How can I solve everyday problems and puzzles involving whole numbers, decimals, fractions, percents,
mixed numbers, and integers? What are strategies I can use to solve mathematical problems?

Rational: This unit accurately and effectively covers the Math 10-4 and 20-4 Program of Studies and curriculum. It offers
engaging and interactive instruction and activities that allow students to gain confidence and proficient problem solving skills.
The unit focuses on solving everyday and workplace problems, connecting the ‘math classroom’ to the real world. It also has an
emphasis on gaining confidence with number sense, with a variety of opportunities to enhance and demonstrate their skills.
As often as possible, the group will work together through problems that matter and participate in hands-on projects. These
will include budgeting, working with baking fractions, and money problems. We will also practice important lifetime skills such
as cooperation, critical and creative thinking, decision making, and problem solving. Overall, this unit will help students
prepare for life after school.
