ABSTRACT
In every action including the sleep, the human brain is actively participating in
all the activities. One of the action of brain is also the work of memorising.
Memorising in simple word is the recalling capacity of the brain, which once
occurred, or once read studied or learnt. This report will take into consideration
of all the factors that would affect the memorising ability of human brain either
negatively or positively.

The human brain takes in use various chemical infusion into the body for
performing any kind of action or reflex action. We will also study the affect of
those, in this report. There would be graphs to depict the working of brain for
performing the brain activity. The various factors involved in memorising how
they work in helping brain to improve the efficiency.

With the age of human, the human brain gradually weakens up. There comes the
tips and tricks by which we can slow down the process of weakening of the human
brain.

Ways of improving different types of memory

We humans all have the same type of brain, but some utilise it more efficiently
but some does not. The memory of a person is generally how much he/she can
remember or recall as and when required. The memory of a person must be
efficiently used and stressed so that the memory keeps on flourishing. Human
memory study is done in psychology field.

The human memory is governed by the science of psychology. The science helps
continuously to improve our daily activities and gradually improve our memory.
Various brain function or activities comprises of a complex process of memory.
Memory is collection of events or activities that we can remember for a period or
permanently.
We cannot imagine how our life would be changed if the memorising power of
the brain becomes less or gets lost, we would not remember our own name, our
family member’s name, etc. Life would become a misery, without our memories.
There are various process that takes place while the advent of memory. The
processes are explained below-
1. Producing an evocation
The brain we have dispatches signals or gestures associated along with the
happening or occurrence we are experiencing and produces connections
between our neurons, called synapses.
3
2. Blending the memory
Blending is the process of committing it for a long-term memory so that we
can recollect it later. If we do not do the recalling action on the memory, the
event that happened earlier would be lost from our mind. The most of the
recalling process happens in our mind automatically, while we are sleeping,
mostly in our dreams. If the memory is recalled frequently then there is
probability that the event can become permanent in our mind.

3. Remembering the memory

Most of us think that recalling the memory is uncomplicated if its strengthened
over time and each time we do so, we undergo that same series of brain activity
again, making it a little stronger. Memory loss is very usual as we get older,
but that cannot stop us from making the process of memory loss, slower. There
are various ways to achieve this, which are listed below:
(i) Meditation
Working memory is the memory part of brain where new information
is kept temporarily. Suppose for example if you are going to someone’s
home having a name “Harris” and the address is “Newtown, south
wales”. The address along with the name of the person will be stored in
the working memory until the purpose of this is completed. After the
work is completed the brain let’s go the information, if this info is not
recalled later on.
We use our working memory every day for various activities and it
helps a lot to make our life easier and simpler when our working
memory is stronger. Mostly a grown up adult can hold up to 7 items in
his/her working memory, but the meditation process can enhance the
number.
Researches have proved that people with no experience with meditation
can improve their memory recall capacity in merely 8 weeks or so.
Meditation helps us to concentrate. During the meditation process our
brain stops actively working on the information as comparing to normal
working.

(ii) Drinking Coffee

Caffeine is known to improve memory if taken before learning
something new. But research work has found that taking coffee prior to
creating new memories had very less effect. However caffeine ingestion

after learning a new activity, helps extensively in recalling memories
for up to twenty-four hours. Mostly people tend to remember any
activity or process by the use of a pattern.

(iii) Intake of berries promote better memory lasting

Diet of a person plays very important role in promoting memory.
Berries in a person’s diet can decline the memory loss problem due to
ageing. A study from a research stated that adding blueberries in a
person’s diet for twelve weeks showed a better performance on spatial
working memory tasks. Another study conducted on 70 years old
female nurses, who were given regular intake of two servings of
strawberries or blueberries every week, were seen to have very less
reduction in memory decline. Blueberries have high content of
flavonoids, which may help to consolidate connections in one’s brain.
(iv) Exercise
Many studies have been done on rats as well as human brains , which
conclude that regular exercise can enhance memory recalling ability.
As old age arrives, more fit the person is, less will be the decline in
memory. Some studies state that exercise can enhance spatial memory,
which means it’s not necessary that all types of memory will get
improved by exercise.

(v) Chewing Gum

Chewing gum, which is considered bad for teeth by dentists, can be a
factor for improving memory of a person, if taken while learning new
things. There is some conflicting researches for this, although in a study
it was seen that people chewing gum while learning new thing had a
better memory recall than the one’s not chewing gum. Hippocampus’s,
a crucial part of one’s brain, activity increases while a person chews
gum and may affect the memory recall.

Another study states that while chewing gum, there is a rise in heart
rate as well oxygen flow in the body of that person, which promotes
better recall of memory.

5
(vi) Sleep
Memory of a person is greatly influenced by the amount of sleep one
gets. Its one of the most important element responsible for better
memory. Its known that most of our memory consolidation is done
during a sleep, so lesser sleep means memory recall will be hampered.
A small duration of sleep can help for better results.
An experiment was done in which two groups were taking part; each
group was given a set of cards to memorise for a specified time. After
that, a 40 min break was given for both the teams; one group was to
sleep in that time other was awake. The group, which slept, did better
than the other one.

Two quotes they portrayed were:

“Much to the surprise of the researchers, the sleep group performed

significantly better, retaining on average 85 percent of the patterns,
compared to 60 percent for those who had remained awake.”

“Research indicates that when memory is first recorded in the brain—

in the hippocampus, to be specific—it’s still “fragile” and easily
forgotten, especially if the brain is asked to memorize more things.
Napping, it seems, pushes memories to the neocortex, the brain’s “more
permanent storage,” preventing them from being “overwritten.” ”

An ample amount of sleep before and after learning new thing plays
very important role in affecting the memory.

4. Attention
According to the dictionary, attention means “the action of dealing with or
taking special care of someone or something”. Attention while studying or
learning a new thing is very important, and there should not be any kind of
distraction that might not help the cause. Focusing on a particular thing
easily helps us to move that memory abstract from the short-term memory
to the long-term memory, thus gradually helping in recalling them in
future.

5. Frequent revision
Frequently revising what is learnt will easily help a lot in promoting a long
term memory, instead of a one-time study.

6
6. Organised way of Reading
While reading any material, it should be read from the starting phase and
not from between, which wold help to understand the topic easily and
memorise easily. Every instance of studying is organised in brain in form
of clusters, so the clusters formed should be in organised way to promote
better recall.

7. Using mnemonics
Suppose we want to memorise the names of various layers in a
communication network model. 7 layers are there in the model, namely
physical layer, data link layer, network layer, transport layer, session layer,
presentation layer, application layer. All these names can easily
memorised by forming a phrase for this, like, Please Do Not Touch Steve’s
Pet Alligator, where the starting letter of each word in the phrase would
resemble the starting letter of each layers respectively.

8. Connect picture with events

Studies confirm the fact that our brain tends to remember pictures in a
better way than written structures. Therefore, to improve memory one must
relate picture with any kind of events.

9. Reading loud
While learning a new thing, it’s always advised to a person to read loud so
that its fast to learn that and memorise that. Various experiments by
psychologists also support that.

10.Extra focus on hard topic

Hard topics like mathematical equations, formula’s, and derivations
require extra focus for memorising those perfectly and for a perfect recall.

11.Change in Study routine

An experiment was done on two persons; person A had a fixed study
routine while person B had a variable study routine. Person B was flexible
in learning new thing any time of the day but person A had fixed time for
that and out of time, learning was less efficient for person A.

People of any age can have memory loss. Health of a person determines a lot
about the memory of the person. A healthier person have a better memory than
the unhealthier one. The graph below suggests that too. This graph is based on
18500 individuals aged between 18 to 99 are taken in to consideration.

CONCLUSION

We in our day-to-day life learn many new things, not everything is important to
memorise and not everything we must forget. Forgetting or remembering
anything completely depends on one’s brain. So taking good care of brain is very
important, and take various steps to enhance the memorising power of it.

This report on “Ways of improving different types of memory” is all about how
the human brain, can be made to work efficiently and help one to improve one’s
memory accordingly. I was guided my Dr. Navneet Kaur, who helped me in
doing the research work. The report involves all the traits, actions, tricks that can
trigger the better performance of the human brain so that the remembering power
of it can be enhanced.

This report also includes graphs, which depict the forgetting cycle of human
brain, which was given by Ebbinghaus and Paul & also the graph of human
memory in accordance with the health of a person.
