Chapter 1 Alarm Management Overview

1.3 Alarm Severity

Alarm Severity
Based on severity, alarms have four levels: critical, major, minor, and warning. For a
descriptions of the four levels, refer to Table 1-1.

Table 1-1 Alarm Severity Description

Alarm Severity Description

Critical Services are affected seriously. Alarms of this level require immediate removal.

Major Services may be affected. Alarms of this level must be removed.

Minor Services will not be affected, but alarms of this level should be handled to avoid
more serious faults.

Warning An error that may affect services is detected. This problem should be analyzed
and removed to avoid possible serious faults.

Redefining Alarm Severity

When the NetNumen U31 system is initialized, alarm severity is set by default. You can
adjust alarm severity based on service requirements and environmental requirements. For
how to set alarm severity, refer to "2.9 Redefining an Alarm Severity".

1.4 Alarm States

Alarm States
Alarm states are as follows:
l Unacknowledged and uncleared
l Acknowledged and uncleared
l Unacknowledged and cleared
l Acknowledged and cleared
Alarms in unacknowledged and uncleared and acknowledged and uncleared states
are called Active Alarms. Alarms in unacknowledged and cleared and acknowledged
and cleared states are called History Alarms.

Alarm State Change Model

For the alarm state change model, see Figure 1-3.

NetNumen U31 R56 Fault Management Operation Guide

Figure 1-3 Alarm State Change Model

l Acknowledge/unacknowledge an alarm
If an alarm is acknowledged, it is handled by maintenance personnel, and its state
changes to acknowledged. You can also unacknowledge an alarm.
l Clear an alarm

If a fault is removed, alarm states change from uncleared to cleared. This type of
alarms are called history alarms, and they are saved to the database of the NetNumen
U31 server.
You can clear an alarm manually, but if the fault that results in the alarm is not removed,
this alarm will be raised again.

1.5 Alarms and Notifications

Alarms
During the operation of managed NEs or the EMS system, if a fault occurs, an alarm is
raised. Users can be informed of the fault, and thus handle the fault. After the fault is
removed, the alarm is cleared.

Notifications
Notifications are messages about the operation of managed NEs or the EMS system. With
notifications, you can be informed of the operation states of all modules.

Difference Between Alarms and Notifications

l Alarms are resulted from faults or exceptions. If they are not removed, services may
be affected. You can acknowledge and clear an alarm.
l Notifications are only messages about the operation of managed NEs or the EMS
system. They do not affect services. You cannot acknowledge and clear a notification.

Alarms
This procedure describes how to set rules for automatically processing alarms.

Context
If an alarm or notification complies with certain conditions, the NetNumen U31 system is
triggered to process the alarm or notification based on alarm rules.

Table 2-6 Alarm Rule Descriptions

Rule Description

Alarm filtering rule Filters alarms that match specified conditions. By default, the filtered
alarms are discarded to the database or not displayed on the GUI. If an
alarm meets both the alarm restraining rule and the alarm filtering rule, it is
filtered by the alarm restraining rule.

Alarm acknowledging Acknowledges alarms that match specified conditions.

rule

Alarm clearing rule Clears alarms that match specified conditions.

Alarm delaying rule Handles intermittent alarms. When alarms meeting the specified conditions
are generated, they will not be reported immediately. Instead, they will be
reported after a certain delay. If these alarms are restored within the delay,
you can choose whether to send them into the history alarm database.

Alarm merging rule Merges alarms that are caused by the same failure and display one alarm
to represent those alarms. You can create multiple rules, but the conditions
of the new rule cannot overlap those of the rules already in existence.

Alarm persisting rule Triggers a user-defined action, if an alarm meeting the specified conditions
remains in the specified state and the duration reaches the threshold. You
can create multiple rules, but the conditions of the new rule cannot overlap
those of the rules already in existence.

Alarm counting rule If the number of times that an alarm complying with particular conditions is
raised exceeds the threshold, a new alarm is raised.

NetNumen U31 R56 Fault Management Operation Guide

Rule Description

Alarm forwarding rule Forwards specific alarms through Email messages or SMS messages to
users who are responsible for handling them.

Alarm masking rule Sends the masking conditions to NE agents, and then the NE agents do
not report the specified alarms to the EMS. This rule can only be set for
NE agents and devices managed by NE agents. If the NE agents are
disconnected or stop operating, only suspended masking rules can be
created.

Alarm triggering script If an alarm meeting the specified conditions occurs, the preset MML script
rules is triggered.

NAF alarm filtering rule Filters alarms that match specified conditions. The filtered alarms will not
be reported to the NMS.

Alarm restraining rule With this rule, users can use specified root alarms to restrain specified
by NE NE-correlated alarms. Alarms that restrain other alarms are called root
alarms, and the restrained alarms are called correlated alarms. Correlated
alarms will be displayed when there is no root alarm. When root alarms
exist, correlated alarms will not be displayed.

Alarm restraining rule With this rule, users can use specified root alarms to restrain specified
by NE type NE type-correlated alarms. Alarms that restrain other alarms are called
root alarms, and the restrained alarms are called correlated alarms. For a
root alarm and its correlated alarms, their NE types must be the same. In
addition, the occurrence position of the specified root alarm must be the
same as that of the specified correlated alarm, or be the parent node of the
correlated alarm's occurrence position.

Notification filtering rule Filters notifications that match specified conditions. Filtered notifications
will neither be displayed on the GUI nor be stored in the database. This
rule only applies to new notifications that are generated after the creation
of this rule.

Repeated notification Filters notifications (with the same location and notification code) that
filtering rule repeat within the specified time from the last notification (including filtered
ones). The filtered notifications will neither be displayed on the GUI nor
be stored in the database. They will be discarded directly. You can see
the occurrence times of a notification by querying notifications. This rule
only takes effect for notifications that are reported after the creation of
this rule. You can create multiple rules, but the new rule cannot overlap
the conditions of the rules already in existence.

Chapter 2 Alarm Management Settings

Rule Description

Frequent alarm rules Merges the repeatedly reported and recovered alarms with the same alarm
ID within a dynamic interval or a fixed period. Alarms are merged based on
dynamic intervals or fixed periods.
The correlated alarms generated during the effective period can be merged

2.7 TOP Alarm Suppression Rules

A TOP alarm suppression rule indicates that if the number of times that the alarms with the
same alarm ID are reported during a specified time period is more than the preset times,
the alarms are suppressed. When the number of times that the alarms are reported is less
than the preset times, the suppression process is stopped. When an alarm is suppressed,
a root alarm is generated. During alarm suppression, the repeatedly reported alarm with
the same alarm ID is called a correlated alarm and is incorporated into the root alarm. The
number of correlated alarms is counted until the suppression termination conditions are
met.
During alarm suppression, only the root alarm instead of the correlated alarm is reported
northward. The root alarm is cleared when the rule expires or is removed manually.
The TOP alarm suppression rule is effective only for the alarms that are reported after the
settings are activated.

2.7.1 TOP Alarm Suppression Setting Tab

On the NetNumen U31 client, select Fault > Setting > TOP Alarm Suppression Setting.

4.4 Maintaining Alarms

4.4.1 Setting an Alarm Backup/Deletion Task
This procedure describes how to set a task for backing up and deleting alarms
automatically.
An alarm backup/deletion task is executed once per day. You can set different types of
alarms to be backed up and the path for saving the backup file. If the backup alarm files
exceeds the threshold, the NetNumen U31 system deletes some alarm files based on rules
to free some disk space.
You can enable the capacity monitoring function and set multiple thresholds. If alarms
exceed a threshold, the corresponding threshold alarm is raised. In addition, the
NetNumen U31 system deletes alarms to ensure that the number of alarms does not
exceed 80% of the lowest threshold. After some alarms are deleted, the corresponding
threshold alarms are cleared.

Steps
1. On the NetNumen U31 client, select Maintenance > Task Management > Show
Timing Task. The Task Management window is displayed.
2. Click Common Task > Historical Data Archiving > Alarm Data Backup and
Deletion Task in the left navigation tree. The corresponding task information is
displayed in the right area, see Figure 4-12.
