Abstract

One of the biggest problems of municipality is everything done

manually till today. Since municipality controls entire city, it is difficult to
monitor each and every place. As a part of the city, the underground drainages
giving rise to lot of problems with name MAN HOLES. As a reality we saw
many deaths due to these Man Holes. There is a need to monitor and control
these unwanted deaths at least by continuously monitoring all the man holes.
Normally municipality face lot of problems but heavily during rainy season. The
water outlets which are present beside the roads are blocked by waste materials
and mud particles. If there is continuous rain then the entire road get blocked
due to water storage on roads as there are no paths for the water to flow. If
there is a man hole, it is impossible to recognize and there may be a chance of
falling into those man holes and leading to death. Apart from the rainy season
man holes leads problem for night time walkers and blind peoples too. Here the
question arises that who is responsible for that death and how to overcome such
problems is a thinking of common man not a part of municipality.

Introduction

1.1 Literature Survey

One of our major problem is that, the road lights, which are never
switched off or on in time. This project is solution for above problems. As a
part of this or as a solution we proposing an embedded based project which
is completely highlights this solution. This project completely modernizes the
municipality. This project going to implement using LPC2148 ARM Controller.
It also uses different continuity sensors, wireless transmitters, etc. The function
of this technology is the vital application for the metropolitan city, which notifies
about the open chambers and provides appropriate actions to be taken and to
identify the blockage of the water outlet beside of the road and also used to
identify the status and monitoring of street lights. . .

2.1 Theoretical background

2.1.1 What is GSM?

An important segment which is growing rapidly is the digital cellular network

used for mobile and wireless devices. These are the wireless extensions of tra-
ditional PSTN or ISDN networks which allows for limitless roaming with the
same mobile phone, all over in the nation or the world. These systems are used
for voice traffic and data traffic. The group special mobile (GSM) was founded
in 1982 for a second generation fully digital system. It was later named as the
global system for mobile communication (GSM). GSM provides the combination
of voice and data services and the internet working of existing networks. GSM
has defined three different categories of services. Bearer Tele Supplementary
services A mobile station MS is connected to the GSM public land mobile net-
work (PLMN) through the UM interface.

3.2 Steps Followed

1) Download the required softwares like :KEIL u4 and install them.
2) Write the program in software.compile and debug errors.
3)After compiling and debugging errors of our application, we connected to
GSM through UART0.
4) Finally we send the message through GSM to municipality.

3.3 Tools Used

3.3.1 ARM kit

ARM, originally Acorn RISC Machine, later Advanced RISC Machine, is a fam-
ily of reduced instruction set computing (RISC) architectures for computer pro-
cessors, configured for various environments. British company ARM Holdings
develops the architecture and licenses it to other companies, who design their
own products that implement one of those architectures including systems-on-
chips (SoC) that incorporate memory, interfaces, radios, etc. It also designs
cores that implement this instruction set and licenses these designs to a number
of companies that incorporate those core designs into their own products.

3.3.2 GSM

GSM (Global System for Mobile communication) is a digital mobile telephony

system that is widely used in Europe and other parts of the world. GSM uses a
variation of time division multiple access (TDMA) and is the most widely used
of the three digital wireless telephony technologies (TDMA, GSM, and CDMA).
GSM digitizes and compresses data, then sends it down a channel with two other
streams of user data, each in its own time slot. It operates at either the 900
MHz or 1800 MHz frequency band.

3.4 Steps to install KEIL

The steps to be followed to install Eclipse and other related softwares
are as follows :

• 1) Go to https://www.keil.com/demo/eval/armv4.htm .

• 2) Click on the MDK474.EXE link, downloading the 590,659K file to your

computer.

MANHOLE

5.1 future scope

it can be used has a set of man holes like sub areas in entire city, by providing
wireless communication. some of advanced sensor also can used in future to
implement the work.this may help to govt to keep city as smart city.

5.2 Conclusion
The progress in science and technology is a non-stop process. New things
and new technology are being invented. As the technology grows day by day, we
can imagine about the future in which thing we may occupy every place. This
project concludes that, the blockage is very major problem where waste outlets
exists and especially in multi storied building it’s difficult to manage blockage.
With this idea it is very easy to track and monitor the status of blockage with
single tip.
