INTRODUCTION

Good acoustics is ideal in every architectural space or structure. This allows good
sound transmission, speech communication, peaceful environment and the like. Some of
these architectural structures are offices, auditoriums, halls, studios and even a simple
room including a typical classroom.

The classroom is a significant element when it comes to the teaching and learning
experience in schools. It is the place where young minds are honed, and where formal
education starts. But more than just a place, it holds a large impact that affects the
communication process between a teacher and a student.

It requires effort and demands focus to be able to teach and learn, so it is widely
acknowledged that good classroom acoustics enhance the learning experience.
Unfortunately, since most of the classrooms are built in its simplest form and features,
acoustics condition faces poor quality.

Most common acoustical classroom challenges, such as noise transfer between

rooms and excessive reverberations arises because schools are not built with due regard
for the quality of classroom acoustics. Poor conditions of classrooms hinder teachers to
be heard above high noise levels, making them vocally strained because of making their
voices louder.

As a requirement for this subject and to address the problems caused by

inadequate acoustic design, we are assigned to compensate for the classroom
challenges and apply the principles of acoustics in a specific classroom that is lacking
effectiveness.

The room that is assigned to our team is Civil Engineering Laboratory (CE Lab)
which measures 36.1667 ft x 32 ft x 10 ft, with two set of windows, four wooden doors,
and an indented room on a corner which measures 4.4167 ft x 11.25 ft x 10 ft.

Despite of the name, the classroom is not designed as a laboratory itself but more
of a lecture room. Moreover, the indented room also needs to be treated acoustically. Its
hard surface reflects sound down making it noisy. Sound waves reflected through large
2

windows causes reverberation that adds noises to the room. Also, since it has a larger
Page

area, sounds continuous to bounce around the space in the room.

INTRODUCTION

Furthermore, acoustic problems that must be considered are sound isolation that
corresponds to the proper design of the walls, the doors, the windows, the ceiling and the
floor. For surface, size and shape-related acoustic challenges, the interior of the room is
the main concern, with proper treatment to this problem the loudness, echoes and
standing wave problems inside the room may be improved.

Lastly, the mechanical noise problems that are caused by other appliances and
peripherals must be considered too, since these influences significant noises that affect
the whole ambiance of the room.

These poor acoustic conditions in the classroom must be treated appropriately in

order to compensate for the noise and destruction that it faces. The right treatment and
suitable design to the classroom give significant effect to its quality for a student-teacher
lecture room. After the considerations of all these acoustic challenges, we come up to a
well-designed and more effective classroom that improves the quality of learning in
schools.

Problems

 The room is concave in shape.

 The room has a large volume.
 The door doesn’t have any seals or gaskets.
 The walls have cracks, the ceiling was broken and the room needs to be repainted.
 There are large areas of hard wall surfaces.
 The floor acts as a reflector for it is unpainted.
 There is an indented room inside.
 There is a whirring sound produced by the electric fans.
 Chairs and tables latter produce disturbing sound.
 There are no diffusive surfaces present in the room.
 The room lacks absorptive materials. A lot of items were needed to be sorted out.
 The room is overcrowded due to the number of students.
 It is difficult to understand conversations when there are multiple groups of people
in the room.
 Outdoor noise can be heard.

DESIGN DESCRIPTION

Based on the principles of acoustics, we came up to a design that suits the needs
for an efficient and effective laboratory room for schools. With the right treatment to the
corresponding acoustic challenge, our team managed to create the design that was
required to attain the improvement of the laboratory room.

The treated laboratory has a measurement smaller than the initial room. Hence,
the total area and the volume were decreased too. Also, curtains were placed to cover
the glass walls and windows. The ceiling was designed to be lower than its initial state
and was installed with acoustic tiles and isolation hangers to minimize the acoustic
energy. Also, from an ordinary smooth cement floor it was covered by carpet and floor
underlayment to improve acoustic quality of the floor.

The room was made into several partitions or sections such as the
laboratory/lecture section, simulation section and the equipment section. These sections
are parted using wooden walls and soundproofing glasses.

The lecture room is where the discussion usually will be held. The laboratory
experiments, activities and the like can be done inside the simulation room while the
equipment section is where the civil engineering instruments and equipment are kept and
can be picked up.

Also, the lecture room was designed with a double pane window with steel frame
and a thick wooden doors which was preferred to be installed with the door seal to
minimize the intensities of the noises coming from the outside and adjacent buildings.

The front wall was indented using a wood. Moreover, sound isolation clips were
installed inside the front wall as well as inside the partitions to minimize the vibration of
sound energy. On the other hand, the corners of the columns were fixed with bass traps
that eliminated the sides of the each posts that was designed to absorb low sound
frequency which ideal for this type of classroom.

Furthermore, we also applied specific elements such as acoustic foam panels

which minimize sound reflection and absorb sound. Also, diffusers are installed on the
back wall.

DESIGN DESCRIPTION

The simulation section was built to ensure that minimum sound will escape from
the room. Its walls are covered with acoustic foam panels and a series of bass panels
located on its corners. It also consist of a triple pane glass surface which is an innovative
solution to sound reflection and may be used as an absorber. The flooring has been lifted
up to provide more absorption of vibrations.

The equipment section was the least concern with regards to the treatment of the
overall room since people only come and go to claim and deposit items. A shelf was used
as an improvised absorber whenever sound transmission occurs from the simulation
section. Also, the window was removed and replaced with a concrete.

The room was fixed, repainted and remodeled with reference to what was needed
in the said treatment. On the other hand, some appliance, furniture and items are bought.
With regards to that, the old air conditioning unit was replaced with a split type which
produces less sound than the latter.

Lastly, for the existing fixtures and appliances inside the classroom, our team
managed to sort the things that are really needed to those which are not. Then, we have
decided to put them to which part they should be in. For the other elements that were
used, the specification was considered to select the appropriate material, and ensuring
that they will not add up to the noise inside the room.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

Sound Combination

Before the acoustic treatment has begun, our team observed a number of tables
and chairs which are excessive with regards to the student, table and chairs ratio. Large
number of students was capable of occupying the room, thus will be producing great
amount of noise. Moreover, tables and chairs create noise when it scratches with smooth
floor concrete. Also, the table tops are made from a smooth material which categorizes it
as a reflector of sound. Sound quality and understanding speech is therefore affected
inside the classroom. If students are not able to clearly hear classroom instructions, then
setting this problem is necessary.

Instead of using smooth plastic and metals on table tops, we have decided to
use painted wood as it can also help with the absorption rather than reflection of sounds.
For the same reason and for added comfortability, we have used wooden chairs with
foam cushion. Also, lesser number of tables and chairs were placed to minimize the
number of students that were able to occupy the room.

Reflected Sound

Reflected sound is the sound that bounces off the walls, floor, ceiling and furniture
before it reaches your ears. In spite of adding a pleasant spaciousness to the sound,
reflected sounds can also distort the sound in a room.

Almost all acoustic problems are caused by reflections off the walls, floor and
ceiling. The shape of the room and the surface materials in it play a vital role in creating
flutter echoes, sound distortion and frequency anomalies such as standing waves. They
usually come with these reflected sounds.

Standing waves is a phenomenon which distort the bass and lower midrange
frequencies. This happens any time sound is reflected back and forth between parallel
reflective surfaces like room walls or floor and ceiling. The resonant frequency depends
on the distance between the two walls.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

A room resonance mode is when a sound wave reflects off a boundary surface
(ceiling, floor or wall) which results to an area of increased amplitude. These resonance
modes create bass peaks and dips throughout the room. This later on combines in
phase with the original direct sound wave.

To find the room resonance modes:

1. Get the dimensions of the room which is the length, the width and the height.
2. Use the formula below to find the main resonance mode.
3.
𝑐
𝐹𝑚 =
2∗𝐷

Where:
F = Frequency of Resonance Mode (Hz)
c = Speed of Sound (1130 ft/s)
D = Distance Between Parallel Walls (ft)
4. Do this for each room dimension.
5. After getting the main resonance, calculate for the following resonance
modes by using the formula:
𝐹𝑛 = 𝑛 ∗ 𝐹𝑚
Where:
Fm = Main Resonance Mode (Hz)
Fn = Nth Resonance Mode (Hz)
n = Number of Resonance Mode (unitless)
6. Accomplish it in a table. If some of the resonance modes appears in another
dimensions within the ± 3 Hz range, these can be considered as trouble
frequencies.

In addition to that, you can:

1. Look at the shape of your room.
a. Square rooms are the worst for echo and standing waves problem.
b. Rectangular rooms have large reflective walls which often create slap
8
Page

echoes and flutter echoes.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

2. Look at the surfaces of the walls, ceiling and floor in the room. If they are
made in flat, reflective materials, then they needed to be treated.

Since the room has two out of its three dimensions equal and with the resonance
modes obtained from it, then, acoustical treatment is needed.

First, the room has been parted and adjusted into a new size wherein the
dimensions could not have any conflict. Another thing is to minimize parallel, flat and
reflective surfaces in the room. This can be accomplished by adding combinations of
absorptive and diffusive treatments (stated in the next considerations) which can be
applied to walls, ceiling, and floor. To treat the large window surfaces, drapes are used
over its sections. By also moving the tables and chairs away from the walls or corners
can also reduce the amount of standing waves present in the room.

Absorb Materials

In fulfilment of the requirement to acoustically treat a room in an efficient and

reliable manner, our team decided to use different sets of materials to act as sound
absorbers in order to improve the acoustic performance of the given room. Sound
absorbers are noise barrier materials which act in a manner wherein they absorb the
sound waves to decrease chances of unwanted sound wave reflections and therefore
improve reverberation time.

To attain the desired acoustic quality of the room, we used specific sound
absorbing materials on the different parts of the room. To lessen the reflections of sound
waves on flat and wide area surfaces such as walls and posts, we used acoustic foams,
acoustic panels, isolation clips and drapes which will absorb sound waves and reduce
unwanted reflections. We also used acoustic tiles and isolation hangers to decrease
sound wave reflections of the ceiling, and the combination of carpet and floor
underlayment to lessen the reflections of the cement floor. Bass traps were also used
on the corners and edges of the room to cancel out multiple sound wave reflections.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

Diffuse Materials

Diffusion is the redistribution or scattering of acoustical energy or sound waves

evenly in all directions of a given environment. It is a key element in acoustics. The
advantage of diffusion is that because the sound energy is scattered rather than
absorbed, that energy isn’t lost, thereby maintaining a more live sound. To achieve
desired diffusions, sound diffuser panels are used and installed in specific parts of the
room. Sound diffuser panels are used to treat sound aberrations such as echoes. It is
made out of strips of material usually wood with different depths; the arrangement of
these strips affects the scattering effect of the sound diffuser panel.

Methods Used to Find the Overall Spot in the Room

Although the room is subjected as laboratory, it is also intended for lecture

purposes, we decided to test the trouble spots in the room using this method:

1. Have three people inside the room. One standing in front in the speaker’s
position, one sitting in the listener’s position, and the other one standing along
the wall holding a mirror.
2. The one holding the mirror moves slightly toward the listening position staying
along the wall.

VISION MISSION

capabilities and institutional mechanisms.
Republic of the Philippines
BATAAN PENINSULA STATE UNIVERSITY
Main Campus, City of Balanga 2100
COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND ARCHITECTURE

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

3. The person in the listener’s position will check if he will be able to see the
speaker (student standing in front) in the mirror.
4. Mark each spot on the wall where the listener can see the speaker in the
mirror.
5. These are the trouble spots in the room that need an absorptive material in
place.

In our case, since the room’s dimension has large wall areas and having a wide
number listeners sitting at different positions, we decided to cover the wall with acoustic
curtains to prevent unwanted sound reflections. Also, we placed acoustic panels on the
walls of the room and sound diffusers at the back end of the room to evenly scatter
sound waves though out the room.

Types of Speakers, Microphones and/or Amplifiers (If Needed)

In putting up speakers, microphones or amplifiers, some criteria are needed to

be considered. Here it goes:

1. Size of the Room

2. Number of Speakers and Listeners
3. Directionality

In reference to the size of the room, the assigned room has a small floor area
and also, a small volume to get covered. With the size of the crowd, there could be only
be one speaker, it is either the instructor which eventually the main speaker or a student
that is taken to be the secondary speaker. The directionality of sound tends to be point-
to-point. Literally speaking, it is from the speaker to the listeners. The voice of the
instructor travels a path to reach his/her students.

Therefore, our team decided not to install such equipment. We can recommend
that the instructor may use a lapel microphone to avoid voice strains or external
speakers can be used if needed.

CONCLUSION

After a series of study of the principles of acoustics, our team was able to establish
a more effective classroom that was based on specific factors and elements of concern
that had relationship to the over-all effects of sound inside the classroom.

From the initial state of Civil Engineering Laboratory, we landed on changing

various elements to counter balance the effects that caused undesirable characteristics
in the room affecting its area and volume, the resonance modes, the trouble frequency,
the reverberation time.

First was the area and volume, from their original calculations the values were
decreased due to the change in the width of the room. Also, to minimize the unwanted
noises and vibrations above the room, another ceiling was built which reduces the height
affecting both its total area and volume.

Length (m) 11.0236 1.3462 10.7633
Width (m) 9.7536 3.429 6.1504
Height (m) 3.048 2.8702
Room Floor Area (m2) 102.9037 66.1986
Room Volume (m3) 313.6504 190.0032

Another factor related to the first consideration was the number of students per
classroom based on the standard size and capacity required for a single person
established by the Commission on Higher Education. Since our team decreased the size
of the room, the standard number of students per classroom was also affected, from the
original capacity of 74 students; the student capacity was decreased to 42.

CONCLUSION

For frequency related parameters, the values were also determined and
calculated. The estimated resonant frequency mode was 16 Hz for the length, 28 Hz for
the width and 60 Hz for the height. The trouble frequencies were also determined through
the measurements of the classroom that showed a measurement within the ± 3 unit range.

CONCLUSION

Furthermore, the reverberation time calculations proved that the treated classroom
was more effective. Based on the absorption coefficients and the calculated areas per
material, we were able to obtain a reverberation time nine times better than the initial
classroom.

Lastly, since this project also required the over-all financial plan for the treatment
of the classroom, the total amount of expenses is ₱ 699,925.00.
