Wirth multi/two-gear drawworks – two independent disc brake systems to achieve maximum
safety. In the event of a reduction or loss of braking force
braking systems of the master brake, the second brake system will engage
accordingly to compensate for the loss. Thus permitting full
and continual operation of the drawworks until remedial work
can be performed on the master brake.

The drawworks in our standard Control of the drawworks disc brake, gear selection and
configuration includes operation of the auxiliary drives are controlled by the
programmable logic controller (PLC) within the drawworks

determined by the ZPS programmable logic controller which
obtains information from the drawworks sensors, the “DCS”

Regenerative braking can preferably manage braking at
low speed or no speed conditions, and can stop the load at
predetermined positions.

Secondary active braking system:

The second braking system is an Eddy current brake, which
is a dynamic electromagnetic braking devicee. This brake is
a high energy absorption device thus maintaining appropriate
braking torque at higher drawworks speeds. Under low-
speed or nospeed conditions the eddy current brake can only
produce low or no braking torque. Under these conditions
the regenerative brake takes on most of the load. The eddy
current braking energy is dis- sipated by water cooling.

Emergency and parking brake system:

The disc brake represents the third braking system and is
used for emergency braking and parking only. The disc brake
and the associated callipers are kept open by a hydraulic
system thereby providing a fail-safe mechanism. In case of an
emergency such as loss of power, hydraulic failure or system
failures of the drives, all callipers will be applied.

Under normal operation conditions the callipers are only

applied for parking, holding the load in a static condition and
thus preventing its uninten- tional lowering or raising.

onshore
Aker Solutions’ state-of-the-art machines contribute significantly to
the efficient mining of fossil resources – onshore and offshore.

The KTB project near Windischeschenbach, Germany is the most

significant geological research project to date. The world’s largest
onshore drilling rig was equipped with 12 900 hp and a total weight
of approx. 2 500 tons. For this project Aker Solutions delivered the
world’s first gear-driven drawworks that was equipped with 4Q
drive and delivered 4 500 hp. The drilling depth of 9 101 m was
limited by extremely high rock temperatures.

KCA Deutag’s T 208 rig is designed to meet Europe’s demanding

environmental standards. The T 208 has a 1 500 hp rating for
drilling depth up to 5 000 m. The rig’s modular design makes
moving locations easy because of its box-on-box substructure.
In 2006 Aker Solutions delivered oilfield drilling equipment such
as Wirth belt-driven 1 600 hp mud pumps, and Wirth gear-driven
drawworks 1 500 hp (ATEX certified).

The two new SAIPEM 3000 hp land rigs 5946 and 5947 operate in
Kazakhstan since 2010 and are designed for harsh environmental
conditions.

Aker Solutions was selected as partner for highly efficient drilling

equipment consisting of three chain-driven HP mud pumps
(Wirth TPK 2200), one two gear-driven drawworks
(Wirth GH 3300 EG-AC-2G) and one electric-driven rotary
table (Wirth RTSS 37 ½”) for each rig.

Aker Solutions recently supplied drilling equipment for seven

3000 hp onshore rigs operated by a Middle East drilling contractor.
The rigs are installed on artificial islands on the upper ZAKUM field
in the Persian Gulf. The scope of supply comprises twenty-one
belt driven mud pumps Wirth TPK 2200 AC-RB, seven two-gear
drawworks Wirth GH 3300 EG-AC-2G, seven rotary tables Wirth
RTSS 49 ½” E w/o gear, seven top drives MH DDM 1000 AC-2M
and seven travelling blocks 750.

The new Transocean Deepwater Asgard and Deepwater Invictus are

ultra-deepwater drillships and capable of operating in water depths
up to 12 000 feet and drilling wells up to 40 000 feet deep. Their
dual derrick system is used worldwide for oil and gas exploration.
Aker Solutions supplied the complete deepwater equipment system
which includes four gear driven mud pumps Wirth TPK 2200 AC-
TG-WJ, one single gear drawworks Wirth GH 9000 EG-AC-1G, one
single gear drawworks Wirth GH 6000 EG-AC-1G, one rotary table
Wirth RTSS 75 ½” H and one rotary table Wirth RTSS 60 ½” H.
Previously unattainable levels of reliability could be achieved with
Aker Solutions’ proven high quality equipment.

Aker Solutions delivered complete drilling equipment packages

for seven deepwater drillships for the Brazilian market. The drilling
units will be delivered between 2015 and 2019. The new vessels
are capable of operating at 10 000 feet water depth and drilling
depths of 40 000 ft. They will be operated by the Norwegian
drilling operators Seadrill and Odfjell Drilling (three each) and one
from Sete Brazil. We supplied four gear driven mud pumps Wirth
TPK 2200 AC-TG-WJ, one multi gear drawworks Wirth GH 6000
EG-AC and one rotary table Wirth RTSS 60 ½” H.

The “Developer”, one of the three new built ultra deep water semi
submersible rigs from MAERSK is designed for the search of
new finds in deep waters and areas with complex soil conditions,
capable to operate in water depths up to 3 000 m (10 000 ft.)
and to drill 10 000 m (30 000 ft.) into the subsoil, measured from
the seabed. Pushing the high advanced technology of this semi
submersible Aker Solutions delivered a multi gear, gear-driven
drawworks type Wirth GH 6000 as main unit together with an
auxiliary drawworks Wirth GH 4500 and four gear driven HP mud
pumps Wirth TPK 2200 with top mounted single AC motor.

The four Songa CAT-D rigs are moored harsh environment semis
ordered by Statoil for the North Sea. It is equipped for up to
500 meters water depth and arctic operations. The complete
topside drilling equipment by Aker Solutions includes three gear
driven mud pumps Wirth TPK 2200 AC-TG-WJ, one multi gear
drawworks Wirth GH 3000 EG-AC-01 and one rotary table Wirth
RTSS 60 ½” H. The equipment complies to the highest offshore
requirements such as Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and NORSOK
standards.
