1. Objective
Define working procedure for commissioning of the optical fiber installed from
Master PLC (Main Control System CH-PLC-1) on Gate Control House 1 to Remote PLC
(CH-HPU-8) on the Gate Control House 2 and from Master PLC (Main Control System
CH-PLC-1) on Control Gate House 1 to Remote PLC (CH-HPU-1) on the Gate Control
House 3.
2. Scoop
This document applies commissioning of optical fiber installed for communication
between boards installed inside the Gate Control Houses.
Staff
All staff must have your SCTR Health / Pension force.
All personnel should have received induction course.
All staff must have received induction courses on the topics:
All personnel should be trained and authorized to perform about activities involved
testing of optical fiber such as light injection and reflectometry.
During the execution of the activity the following personal protective equipment is used.
• Safety Helmet.
• Gloves anti cut or as required.
• Safety glasses.
• Safety shoes.
• Sunscreen, if it is necessary.
• Reflective Vests by position, if it is necessary.
• Earplugs and / or earmuffs
• Respirator gas, dust if it is necessary.
4. Definitions.
The main definitions you need to consider are:
• Fiber Optical:
Optical fiber is a transmission medium usually employed in data networks; a very thin
thread of transparent material, glass or plastic, through which light pulses that represent
data to be transmitted is sent. (See Figure 1)
Figure 1.
• Insulation:
External insulating envelope applied to the optical fiber.
• The Core:
Silica, fused quartz or plastic - in which the optical waves propagate.
Diameter: 50 or 62.5 um for multimode fiber and single mode fiber for 9um.
CHEVES HYDROPOWER PROJECT H-H-H-Z-606
• OTDR:
An optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) is an optoelectronic instrument used to
characterize an optical fiber. An OTDR is the optical equivalent of an electronic time
domain reflectometer. It injects a series of optical pulses into the fiber under test. It also
extracts, from the same end of the fiber, light that is scattered (Rayleigh backscatter) or
reflected back from points along the fiber. (This is equivalent to the way that an electronic
time-domain reflectometer measures reflections caused by changes in the impedance of the
cable under test.) The strength of the return pulses is measured and integrated as a function
of time, and plotted as a function of fiber length.
• Laser Pointer:
Device that emits visible light and bright (as pulses or continuous) and
used to evaluate the continuity of fibers.

8. Description of Procedure.
To commissioning optical fiber in Checras, Staff should perform the following
steps:
• Before beginning any activity work will be marked area using safety cones.
• Use of EPP'S equipment protection will be checked, as well.
This test is a simulation and consists of injection of light using a Laser Pointer. Put
the device at one end of the fiber will be a LC or SC connector; in order to see the
spread of light from end to end this ensures us that the medium transmission is good
continuity of the wires connected. It is important to consider that dust and finger
grease block emission light and those dirt fiber connectors extend to other connections.
This test will be performed for both stretches from Gate Control House 1 to Gate
Control House 2 and Gate Control House 1 to Gate Control House 3 (For more information
consult Annex C)
Reflectometry test will be performed after the testing of light injection and too for
both stretches from Gate Control House 1 to Gate Control House 2 and Gate Control
House 1 to Gate Control House 3 (To review reflectometry protocol, consult Annex
C). The following test equipment is used with qualified Staff: Equipment Optical
Reflectometer (OTDR).
So, Staff will proceed executing reflectometric test. Using OTDR testing all strands
of fiber optic cable containing fiber optic, complying with safety, health and
environment, with the goal of zero accidents / incidents. The work includes:
First placing the fiber in OTDR port and start the reflectometry test with OTDR.
OTDR send light pulses and checks the light reflecting. The time it takes for light to be
reflected indicates the length of the event that causes the reflection. How much to send
lighter is required to detect a reflection, the greater the loss of that event. When the pulse
hits a connection, some of the light is reflected. This will identify reflection events
(connections) and non-reflective (splices and excessive bends).
Through these tests the continuity of the fibers will be verified, and the existence of
any specific irregularities and kilometric attenuation must match the data specified by
the cable manufacturer in their factory testing protocols.
If present any physical damage the wire or reel shall inform Cemprotech and
continues with testing for verification of optical parameters.
The expected value for each fiber depends on the length and the expected or
theoretical attenuation value in dB. It is calculated with the following formula:
where:
AT = theoretical attenuation
α = attenuation per kilometer of Fiber Optics in dB / km.
L = Length of the Fiber Optic Cable.
C = Number of connectors.
E = Number of joints
In summary by testing the continuity of the fibers will be found, as well as stocks of
possible irregularities struts and kilometric attenuation to be contrasted with the data
specified by the cable manufacturer in their factory testing protocols, reports will be
issued certification obtained by the OTDR and be attached to a check record of laying
and tests.
