Science 41P Lesson 3 Assignment

Questions
Respond to each of the following questions. Please use the prescribed method for working
through word problems (see example 1 in lesson 2). Show all work and diagrams.

1. State Newton’s first law of motion in your own words.

2. State Newton’s second law of motion in your own words.

3. State Newton’s third law of motion in your own words.

4. What is the net force, or resultant, on an object that is in equilibrium?

5. What force is needed to accelerate a 50.0 kg mass at 3.4 m/s2?

6. A force of 35.4 N is applied to an object of 3.25 kg. What is the acceleration produced on
the object?
7. A person whose mass is 85.4 kg is standing on a board that has an area of 1.20 m2. What
pressure is this person exerting on the floor beneath the board?

8. What average force is needed to stop in 0.050 seconds a hammer with a momentum of 25
Ns?

9. A car has a momentum of 20,000.0 Ns and a speed of 10.0 m/s. What is the car’s mass?

10. Freight car A has an initial speed of 3.50 m/s and a mass of 13,250.0 kg. It hits freight car B,
which is at rest and has a mass of 15,000.0 kg. Freight cars A and B couple and roll off as
one. What is their final speed?
11. Two steel balls hit head-on in a perfect elastic collision. Ball A has a mass of 25.5 kg and an
initial speed of 3.5 m/s. Ball B has the same mass as ball A but an initial speed of 5.6 m/s.
Ball A rolls away at 4.3 m/s after the collision. What is ball B’s final speed?

12. A pitcher throws a batter a perfect pitch. The ball arrives at the plate going 46.7 m/s (about
105 mi/h). The batter hits the ball and sends it out of the ballpark going 52.5 m/s. If the
ball’s mass is 0.035 kg, what was the impulse imparted by the bat on the ball?

13. A force of 344.9 N is applied to an area of 0.435 m by 95 cm. What is the resulting
pressure?

14. The rectangular heels of a woman’s shoe measure 1.5 cm by 1.4 cm. While being mugged in
the street she swings the shoe such that it hits the mugger in the head with a force of 75 N.
What pressure does the heel exert on the mugger’s head? (Ouch!)
15. A car is initially traveling at 35.2 m/s. The driver then accelerates for 15.1 seconds at a rate
of 4.55 m/s2.

a. What is the car’s final velocity?

b. How far did the car travel during those 15.1 seconds?

16. A picture is hanging on the wall by a wire that forms a 26.5° angle with the top of the frame.
The picture has a mass of 9.3 kg. What is the tension in the wire?
17. Write the correct units for each concept listed.
