Power is the ability to attract other people, to control the organizations and to achieve

goals. An organization is formed with different people with different behaviors, expertise who
are working together to reach goals and targets. To accomplish these goals and targets, everyone
is utilizing their power particularly. Some people practice the power efficiently to get better
results and achievements in organization. But we sadly found that some misuse the power for
their own profit. Among many types of power, below are the most significant and frequently
happened not only in our organization but also others in Myanmar.

Legitimate Power – Legitimate power is the power of the people who possess the high-
level position and they influence the people in lower position in organization. As an example,
COO is a very talented and creative employee in our organization. He is not only a smart worker
but also hard working in organization. He is very reliable and trusted by CEO. Most of the
authorities are in his hand. But he has misused his trustworthiness. He employs his relative in
our organization without any educational background, qualifications and experiences. He gives
higher salary, empowerment than others, unfair workload and opportunities. He is using his
legitimate power which is the power of position and responsibilities in organization. He usually
sets up the goals and targets with very limited time without any discussion with his
subordinates. He never listens others’ opinions and suggestions. No one is not allowed to protest
his decisions. Although he is aiming to be perfect in organization, he mistreats his subordinates
by using legitimate power.

Reward Power – Our organization exercises the reward power to gain the desired target.
The expectation of reward power is to achieve goals by motivating employees. Bonus, Incentives,
Recognition, Applause are the reward power which persuades employees to follow the
instructions for higher productivity.
