Evening Enrichment Programme. Lim Wei Jiet is the Deputy Chair of the Bar
Council's Constitutional Law Committee and has been involved in or was lead
counsel for several of the major constitutional cases of the last few years. He will be
giving a talk on "Dictators & Dissidents in Court - Life as aConstitutional Lawyer in Malaysia".
Everyone is welcome to come - not just lawyers! Given his experience at the sharp end of Malaysia's
democratic struggles, I am sure this will appeal to a wide range of students. The talk starts at 7 p.m. and

Lim Wei Jiet is a dispute resolution lawyer based in Messrs Sreenevasan. He is also the current Deputy
Chairperson of the Bar Council’s Constitutional Law Committee & serves as the Secretary-General of the
National Human Rights Society of Malaysia (HAKAM).
Wei Jiet has acted as counsel/co-counsel in a wide range of landmark cases in constitutional & human
rights law in Malaysia. He represented the Selangor Government in challenging the controversial 2016 re-
delineation of electoral boundaries on grounds of malapportionment & gerrymandering. He was lead
counsel for 4 University of Malaya students which succeeded in quashing the varsity’s decision to punish
them for exercising their freedom to protest on the 1MDB scandal. He was also involved in the habeas
corpus challenge against Maria Chin Abdullah’s detention without trial under the Security Offences (Special
Measures) Act 2012 on the eve of the Bersih 5.0 civil rights rally.
Outside court, he spearheads multiple initiatives to raise constitutional literacy & to advocate for reforms to
the Federal Constitution. He is a member of the Home Ministry’s Technical Committee on Reviewing
National Security Legislations, which was tasked to propose reforms on a whole host of crime prevention &
terrorism related laws after the 14th General Elections. He was also a Fellow on Media Law & Policy at the
University of Hong Kong.
Wei Jiet graduated with an LLB (Hons.) from the University of Malaya in 2015. During his varsity days, Wei
Jiet was the varsity debating team captain. He was an ESL Semi-Finalist of the World Universities Debating
Championship, ESL Grand-Finalist of the Austral-Asian Intervarsity Debating Championship & winner of the
Global Debate & Public Policy Challenge. He was also an avid mooter - having represented the varsity in
the Phillip C. Jessup International Law Moot Competition & National Novice Arbiration Moot Competition.
This is the talk about defending basic rights in Malaysia that I mentioned in
assembly.
For those new students, the Friday Enrichment Evenings are a great time to get
together, eat pizza, listen to an interesting speaker and ask some probing questions
or discuss thought provoking topics. They are informal and interactive - beans bags
and mufti - kind of sessions.
Any questions, please let me know but I hope to see you there on Friday, 5th Oct.
