Discussion

Since this main aim is to minimize the seepage losses through foundation, it was necessary to
determine the amount of water that passes through a soil in a set amount of time which is also
called as seepage loss. The most appropriate laboratory test is falling head permeability test. This
involves flow of water through a relatively short soil sample connected to a standpipe which
provides the water head and allows measuring the volume of water passing through the sample.
The diameter of the standpipe depends on the permeability of the tested soil.

Rather than constant head permeability test, falling head permeability laboratory test was chosen
because the falling head permeability test has a high dispersion and is not sensitive to change in
porosity. Falling head test is also more suitable for fine grained soil such as silt and clay. When
testing low hydraulic conductivity soils, falling head test can be completed in a short-time span
and the piezometric level (PL) of the soil surrounding the injection zone is not necessary for
interpretation. For falling head, the head decreased as water infiltrates through the test portion,
thus the pressure diminished throughout the test.

By accurately testing the seepage loss through the foundation, suitable grain size of filters can be
designed to block the movement of the base soil materials while allowing seepage water to
continue to be discharged safely. Filter design controls the direct the flow of seepage water and
prevent movement of soil particle from or between various zones and foundation of embankment
dams. If it is not controlled, can result in concrete leaks that can lead to serious consequences, in
extreme cases, failure of embankment dam. Thus, seepage loss must be tested thoroughly for
suitable designs.
