1st Grade (could also be done with 2nd depending time of year)

This is a lesson highly centered on the Orff approach. I used only Orff pieces that I combined together. I organize my lessons by sing, move, and play.

This lesson will culminate in the playing the piece, while another group sings and performs movement. Students will then derive the rhythm for the piece
they have performed.

Objectives: We will create movement individually.

We will identify and perform AB form.

We will play classroom instruments to accompany singing and movement. 

We will prepare to derive and write the rhythm.

Activity Time Materials Process


Warmup 5-7 Eagle 1.) Start with movement/ class cheer.

2.) Solo singing warmup game: passing game- Who has the eagle? 3.)
Students pass an object. Whoever it lands on sings a solo “I have the
eagle.” Teacher gives positive feedback on singing. Child in middle
guesses who the singer was.
Sing and Move: 10 (Volume 1 Orff 1.) Review singing game from last week.

Play: RU piece 25 1.) Review patting drone and body percussion in spots.
and drone 2.) Students play a simple drone on a xylophone, then switch to a hand
drum in their lap on the B section-Model playing drone and
transferring body percussion to hand drum with mallets.
3.) Give expectations for xylophones and mallets. Technique
reminders. Move to instruments!
4.) Students review B section only playing mallets on the floor.
5.) Play simple drone on xylophone, mallets on floor for B section.
6.) Add hand drums to a few students!

Notes for next week: Have half of students play while other half
does singing and movement. Derive rhythm of text and write it down
together!
Conclusion 5 1.) Students mindfully reflect on day. They are asked to not speak and
close their eyes if they would like to. Students then show a “drop” or a
“drip” for their bucket.
