Tests of Significance – 4
Tests Concerning Population Variances

1. The volume of containers of a particular lubricant is known to be normally distributed with a

variance of 0.03 liters. Test the hypothesis H0: 𝜎 2 = 0.03 against the alternative H1: 𝜎 2 ≠ 0.03
for the random sample of 10 containers with contents 10.2, 9.7, 10.1, 10.3, 10.1, 9.8, 9.9,
10.4, 10.3 and 9.8 liters.

2. The nicotine content in mg is found in sample of 5 cigarette is 24, 27, 26, 21, 25 which were
manufactured by company of A. In another sample of 6 cigarette of B the nicotine content
found to be 27, 30, 28, 31, 22, 36. Can it be said that the variability in nicotine content of
cigarette manufactured by A is more than company B (use α=0.01)

3. A random sample was drawn from two countries given the following results relating to heights
of adult males.
Country A B
Size of sample 100 200
Standard Deviation 4 6

Test whether the variance in the height of adult males in country A is less than that of
country B.
