The Problem
? ?
An inefficient research application process leads to less time spent
? ?
on high-value research and grant related activities
Engineering
Students at universities rely on disconnected department websites that make it
difficult for them to approach and communicate with principal investigators
regarding research opportunities in a lab
Neuroscience

Because of this, students send 20-30 emails at a time to different faculty hoping to
secure a position, but only end up hearing from maybe 5
Chemistry
This is because the PI’s valuable time is taken up in the entire onboarding process

All in all, the current method is a time consuming and an unstructured process
Economics
How we are fixing it

We are building a web application to optimize the onboarding

process between students and PIs in research labs
A centralized, configurable, and optimized network that matches students with a
lab that best fits their interests

We plan to consolidate data from multiple lab websites into one application portal
for both students and PIs to access

This means we can revamp the research application process for PIs and allow
students to apply to multiple opportunities simultaneously, which saves money and
time for both parties
Impact on a larger scale

Societal advancements in every industry begin with the

research and development phase
Physicians, engineers, policymakers, and even economists can design
and implement experiments and solutions

Hospitals, pharmacies, and businesses in any market can work

together to provide the benefits found from the research

CURVE can improve all facets of societal advancements by improving

fundamental research process
Supported by Office of Research Awards

“Since Pitt is a large and decentralized

university, CURVE would make the process of
finding research opportunities easier for
students and a more efficient way for PIs to
connect to students interested in research, thus
allowing both parties to spend less time on
Semifinalists Finalists 4th Place
managing the process and more time focusing
on the match.”
