Exercise 2
AGROECOSYSTEM

This activity is the continuation of the first exercise which was the identifying of pests
and their natural enemies. In this activity, we were tasked to know the different trophic levels in
the eggplant farm, and to identify the role of biotic and abiotic factors in an agroecosystem.

In this, we visited the crop assigned to us again which is the eggplant. We further look at
all the biotic and abiotic factors affecting the growth and behavior of the eggplants. And as we
found out the biotic and abiotic components of that agroecosystem, we also were able to
identify their different tropic levels.

For the biotic factors, three were identified to be in the first trophic level which are the
eggplant itself, the two weeds which are the makahiya and purple but sedge. This three
identified biotic factor produces their own food by the process of photosynthesis. Though this
weeds, as well all know competes with the eggplant for the nutrients supplied by the soil.
Another biotic factors identified are in the second trophic level which are the ants, butterfly and
Colorado potato beettle. Though ants and butterfly are both beneficial insects as they are both
natural pollinators, the Colorado potato beettle is a pest.

And as for the abiotic factors, we have soil as the source of minerals needed by the
plants, sunlight as the source of solar energy needed in photosynthesis, mulch citronella for
retaining moisture ad regulating plant temperature and lastly the plant debris in which will later
be decomposed turning into organic matter.

Thus, as we able to identify their trophic level, we were also educated as to what roles
they portray in the agroecosystem and how crucial they are in the production of eggplants.
