Deere & Co. said Thursday it notified about 125 workers in Ankeny and Dubuque they will be laid off, effective
next month, due to the continued slowdown in farming and energy industries.

It's the second round of cuts the Moline, Ill.-based farm and construction equipment manufacturer has made in
less than a month.

Deere said Thursday it would indefinitely lay off about 75 employees in Dubuque and about 50 workers in
Ankeny.

The Dubuque plant makes construction and forestry equipment, and the Ankeny plant produces farm and turf equipment.

The layoffs in Dubuque are effective April 29; in Ankeny, April 15.

Deere warned last month that it expected its construction and forestry equipment sales to fall 11 percent this year, given a weaker North
American energy industry.

And the sales of tractors, combines and other farm equipment is forecast to drop as much as 20 percent in the U.S. and Canada this fiscal year.

The company reported first quarter earnings fell 34 percent to $254 million last month.

The company aggressively cut its Iowa workforce last year, slashing about 1,400 jobs in Ankeny and Waterloo due to the softening farm economy.

Deere said the company continues to balance the size of its manufacturing workforce with market demand for products at individual factories.
