Old Brass Wagon II – 3rd grade


PLAN for READINESS:
I. Goals/Objectives/Standards
Goal – To sing and learn the dance to Old Brass Wagon (OBW)
Standard – Standard 6: Listening and responding to a varied repertoire of music by
interpreting and expressing music through music
Objective statements – The students will sing and dance to OBW with steady beat through
teacher observation.
II. Purpose:
Q? #1 – What is the thinking clue that you use to know when to clap?
Q? #2 – When do you do the turn-under with your partner?
Materials & Technology:
- Laptop/projector
- Power Point

III. PLAN for ACCOMODATION:

Inclusion – Students will be accommodated according to individual needs visually,


aurally and kinesthetically
Remediation – Students will be placed next to those who can help instruct as the class
progresses
Enrichment – Students will be given opportunities for enhancements within the dance and
song

PLAN for INSTRUCTION:


IV. Anticipatory Set:
- Review song:
o Go through each verse while using the motions, taking pauses after each verse. (teacher sings
first then students sing w/ teacher)
o Then sing the song w/motions without stopping

V. Lesson Presentation:

- Guidelines:
o Have the student read them with teacher
o The signal: shh shh shsh shh
- Students pick partners; assign partners to a color on the square
Dance instructions:
- Circle to the left: students will circle clockwise around the square. Without holdings
hands. Clap on “-lin” of “darlin’”
- Circle to the right: students will circle counterclockwise around the square, w/out
holding hands. Clap on “-lin” of “darling”
- Heads to the center: reds & greens move in first (IN, 2, 3, high 10 & OUT, 2, 3,
clap) then the blues & yellows move in. (high 10 & clap on ‘wa”)
- Right and left through: reds & greens first; high five w/ opposite hands and move to
the opposite color. (red will go to green and green move to red) (IN, 2, 3, HIGH 5, 2,
3, clap). Blues & yellows will do the same. (RG high five & clap on “lady”, BY high
five on “shady”)
- Promenade Home: grasp hands w/ partner and start to circle to the left (pair of
hands that are facing left are lead hands). On “swing your own”, twirl under arms and
clap on “-lin” of “darlin”

VI. Closure/Check for understanding:


- Perform all the way through without stopping
- Challenge round: say any of the calls and students will dance. i.e. “Circle to the
right” then “promenade home”.

VII. Independent Practice:


- Posttest matching game
