Objectives
The general objectives that the minor programs aim to fulfill after an
individual completes the program.
B.S. Management
The B.S. Management program is devoted to developing the next generation of high-impact entrepreneurs
by giving students not just the theoretical frameworks but also the practical experience that will maximize their
potential for future business success.
The program curriculum is designed to develop in our students the sort of entrepreneurial eye and attitude
that will help them to see opportunities where others might see problems, to innovate where others might be
contented to simply keep things the same, to say “I will do it” where others might be contented to simply wait
for someone else to do it.
To achieve this, the major curriculum of the program is heavily project- oriented, with an emphasis on
experiential and hands-on learning, rather than just classroom-based and textbook learning.
Over the four years of the program, students are given multiple opportunities to hone their business planning
skills.
Communication Courses
• Introduction to Communication and Communication Theory
• Information Society
• Visual Thinking for Communication Managers
• Introduction to Broadcast Media
• Audio and Video Production Techniques
Decision Science
OBJECTIVES:
The Decision Science Minor Program aims to provide students with tools for improving the quality
of decisions and managing decision making at the level of the individual, as well as the organization
(group decision making). The approach will be multi- disciplinary, with topics taken from management
science, psychology, philosophy, and political science. The courses offered under the program will
provide students with the theoretical and methodological foundations for dealing with complex
problems, like, defining the problem as well as generating, evaluating, and implementing solutions.
Finance
OBJECTIVES:
The goal of the finance minor program is to provide depth and additional exposure to students who
wish to pursue careers in corporate finance, investment management, or banking.
Information Technology
OBJECTIVES:
This minor intends to equip SOM majors with the knowledge and skills necessary in identifying and
managing information technology solutions to help attain business objectives. It includes courses
covering IT infrastructure and business applications, technology planning, and information resource
planning. Graduates of the program may opt to pursue IT consulting and management.
International Business
OBJECTIVES:
To provide an overview of the nature and intricacies of international business through course work in
regional and global oriented courses in Marketing, Strategy, Finance, Economics, Law and Culture
To introduce the student to transnational and cross-cultural tools and skills needed to successfully
conduct business in an increasingly international setting, towards developing a competent global
executive
Management
OBJECTIVES:
Regardless of the path that Ateneo graduates choose to pursue, most of them will eventually find themselves holding
positions of responsibility with the organizations that they join. Every time that they do so, they will find that they can
more effectively manage the teams and the organizations that they lead if they have had more formal training in the
various functional areas of management.
It does not matter whether they are running a business or a household, a museum or a professional association, a school
or an NGO – whenever results need to be achieved and resources are limited, whenever responsibility and accountability
go hand-in-hand, whenever people and funds have to be organized, managed, and led, knowledge of the core
management disciplines will prove to be invaluable.
JGSOM would thus like to offer students in non-business courses the possibility of acquiring a working knowledge of the
core management disciplines by offering this minor program in Management.
Marketing
To understand more fully the multiple roles and responsibilities of the HR professional in today’s world which include:
• The management of strategic human resources – the HR has to align HR and business strategies to ensure overall
success of the organizational goals. Therefore, the HR professional becomes an important strategic partner.
• The management of the firm’s infrastructure - the HR professional has to reengineer organizational processes
like staffing, training, appraising, rewarding, promoting and otherwise managing the flow of employees. The HR
professional ensures that these processes are designed and delivered effectively.
• The management of employee contribution – the HR professional has to listen and respond to employees and
thereby increase employee commitment and capability. Ultimately, the HR professional has to be active and
aggressive in developing the organization’s intellectual capital – its employees.
• The management of transformation and change - the HR professional has to create a renewed organization. By being
both cultural guardian and cultural catalyst, the HR professional effectively identifies and implements processes for
change.
To develop and enhance skills required of competent HR professionals including:
• Strategic, creative and systems thinking approaches to human resource capital management
• Leadership skills in all four levels – personal, interpersonal, managerial, and organizational
• Multidisciplinary capabilities in the management of 21st century organizations.
Project Management
OBJECTIVES:
Business across industries are valuing project management skills more and more for the successful planning and
execution of various initiatives, including the likes of research, marketing campaigns, product development, business
process reengineering, construction, mergers and acquisitions, and even corporate restructuring. In fact, in a survey
of recent Ateneo graduates, project management has been called out as a field of study that they would have wanted
further emphasized in the curriculum given their current experience in the workplace.
To address this gap, the John Gokongwei School of Management is introducing the Minor in Project Management
which provides coverage of both the technical and social aspects of managing projects. It likewise provides an avenue
for students to apply the tools and techniques in managing scope, time, quality and resources in a two semester long,
real-life project. Moreover, the minor program can actually be the first step in gaining certification from the Project
Management Institute (PMI) as it fulfills the latter’s 35 hour formal instruction requirement.
Shifting Experiences
“First things first. It is important that you are 100% sure you want to
shift. Go to the guidance, and take a look at the course descriptions
again and perhaps seek some advice from the counselor, it helps...”
SOM Minors
“Most minors can only be started in 3rd or 4th year, try and take a look at
the subjects you need to take per minor to see which one best suits you.”
Double Minoring
“This situation can be better managed by planning ahead, in my opinion.
Take into consideration the following: (1) possible units during summer
(you’re allowed a maximum of 9); (2) free electives and major electives (most
often in your senior year, though some opt to take these electives earlier).
Knowing these may make it possible to double-minor and finish on time.”
“Will I finish it? - Extremely important; taking subjects for a minor you
suddenly feel no motivation to study for and complete only wastes units -
basically, you’re wasting time and tuition.
What fulfillment do I get from it? - If you actually HAVE an answer to this
question, then you can seriously consider pursuing your minor.... [Increase
of employment opportunities; lack of specialization with core subjects;
personal satisfaction and gratification]”
Double Majoring
“It’s really difficult to double major. Chances are you will be delayed. But
make sure you have good relationships with both departments cause they
will be the ones who will be helping you all throughout. Best to pick a
course that compliments your other course. Try and make your own ‘ideal
IPS and coordinate with the program director to see your options.”
