Understanding Greater Love

A reflection for the movie "Journey to the West."

For me who really do not much take romantic love as a priority, well for
now, I can't avoid myself but to criticize or even make fun of people who are into
this thing. I would think of them as like fool who just wasting their time for a
temporary happiness or shall I say lower affections. Like are they not thinking of
something great like their dreams and aspiration? Or do they think life will just
go well with their half-assed efforts. All of these things are basically what's on
my head for most of the time but that changes when I got struck by a funny Chinese
action movie "Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons." It's a funny movie that
I found it so entertaining but at the same time it gives me something to realize
that my way of thinking is wrong.
The movie follows to an awkward monk protagonist who fights his way to
conquer demons even though he know he doesn't have experienced enlightenment yet
and what's more is the way he choose to fight demons is quite peculiar. Through
nursery ryhmes/songs he ought to bring out the goodness of the demons. And because
of that he can't help but to compare himself to other demon hunters who have a
really flashy way of fighting the demons and it even went as far as questioning his
ability. Knowing how much he needs to work on, he sets his priority to improve
himself. When a girl demon hunter who he met through multiple of times during their
work, confess to him that she love the protagonist, the monk rejects her for
multiple of times he said that he is not interested with that 'lesser love' for he
set his gaze up for the 'greater love.' But all of that changes when the girl died
in saving him and that made him realize the love he felt for the girl, he also
realize that there is no such thing as lesser love, all of those which he assumed
to be, contributes to the greater love and thus he gain deeper understanding to
life and he finally experienced enlightenment.
Because of the movie I came into conclusion that it is wrong to look
down on other people's happiness and emotion. That there are different ways for
people to live there life and when that way they choose gives them something to
continue in living that is not something to make fun of. I now realize that love
which is such a big word is so important for a man to not just make himself feel
good but also to understand life and become a compassionate being.
