a) Enumerate the Different Major tectonic plates in the world
1. African Plate - is a major tectonic plate. It includes
much of the continent of Africa, as well as oceanic crust which lies between the continent and various surrounding ocean ridges. Since the continent of Africa includes both the African and the Somali plates, some literature refers to the African Plate as the Nubian Plate to distinguish it from the continent as a whole.
2. Antarctic - is the area around the Earth's South Pole. It is
opposite the Arctic region which is around the North Pole. The Antarctic includes the continent of Antarctica and the ices, waters and islands in the Southern Ocean.
3. Australian Plate - is a major tectonic plate in the
eastern and, largely, southern hemispheres. Originally a part of the ancient continent of Gondwana. 4. Pacific Plate - is an oceanic tectonic plate that lies beneath the Pacific Ocean. At 103 million square kilometres (40,000,000 sq mi), it is the largest tectonic plate.
5. South America - is the continent to the south of
North America. These two continents are separated by the Panama Canal.
b) Identify the international and local organizations involving Earthquakes
