1.04 REFERENCES

A. The referred codes and standards are intended to provide an acceptable level of
quality for materials, products and workmanship. In case of conflict between these
standards and the text of this Specification, the Specification text shall govern.

B. The latest revision of the referred codes and standards shall be used wherever
applicable. In case of conflict, the Contractor shall propose equipment, materials and
processes conforming to one group of codes and standards.

1.05 DEFINITIONS

A. backshores: Shores placed snugly under a concrete slab or structural member after
the original formwork and shores have been removed from a small area without
allowing the slab or member to deflect or support its own weight or existing
construction loads from above.

B. centering: Specialized temporary support used in the construction of arches, shells,


and space structures where the entire temporary support is lowered (struck or
decentered) as a unit to avoid introduction of injurious stresses in any part of the
structure.

C. diagonal bracing: Supplementary formwork members designed to resist lateral


loads.

D. falsework: The temporary structure erected to support work in the process of


construction; composed of shoring or vertical posting, formwork for beams and slabs,
and diagonal bracing.

E. form: A temporary structure or mold for the support of concrete while it is setting and
gaining sufficient strength to be self-supporting.

F. form coating: A liquid that may be applied to the surface of the form for one or more
of the following purposes: to protect the form surface and give it long life, to retard
the set of the surface of the concrete to make it easy to expose the aggregate at a
later time, or to promote the ease with which formwork can be removed.

G. form release agent: A liquid applied to the surface of a form to promote easy
removal (stripping) of the form from the concrete.

H. form tie: A manufactured steel wire, bar, or rod specially designed to prevent
concrete forms from spreading due to the fluid pressure of freshly placed concrete.

I. formwork: Total system of support for freshly placed concrete including the mold or
sheathing that contacts the concrete as well as all supporting members, hardware,
and necessary bracing.

J. insert: Anything other than reinforcing steel that is rigidly positioned within a
concrete form for permanent embedment in the hardened concrete.

K. preshores: Added shores placed snugly under selected panels of a deck forming
system before any primary (original) shores are removed. Preshores and the panels
they support remain in place until the remainder of the complete bay has been
stripped and backshored, a small area at a time.

L. reshores: Shores placed snugly under a stripped concrete slab or other structural
member after the original forms and shores have been removed from a large area,
thus requiring the new slab or structural member to deflect and support its own
weight and existing construction loads applied prior to the installation of the reshores.

M. shores: Vertical or inclined support members designed to carry the weight of the
formwork, concrete, and construction loads above.

N. striking: The releasing or lowering of centering or other temporary support.

1.06 DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

A. The design and engineering of formwork shall be the responsibility of the Contractor
and it shall be in accordance with ACI 318RM, ACI 347 and 347R.

B. Formwork shall be designed, erected, supported, braced, and maintained so that it


will safely support all vertical and lateral loads that might be supplied until such loads
can be supported by the concrete structure. Vertical and lateral loads must be carried
to the ground by the formwork system and by the in-place construction that has
attained adequate strength for that purpose.

C. Forms shall be designed, constructed, and maintained so as to ensure that after


removal of forms, the finish concrete members will have true surfaces, free of offset,
waviness and bulges and will conform accurately to the indicated shapes,
dimensions, lines, elevations, and positions within the tolerances.

D. The surface of forms shall be engineered and designed to provide correct finish.

E. Formwork shall be designed so they can easily and safely removed without impact or
shock or damage to concrete surfaces and adjacent materials.

1.07 SUBMITTALS

A. The Contractor shall submit the following for review by the Royal Commission:

1. Manufacture’s Data

a) Manufacturer’s data and installation instructions for materials including


form coatings, manufactured form system, ties and accessories.

2. Shop Drawings

a) Shop Drawings for fabrication and erection of formwork for finished


concrete surfaces.
1) The Shop Drawings shall show the general construction of forms
including jointing, special formed joints or reveals, placement of
inserted items, location and pattern of form tie placement, and
other items which affect the stable retention of the cast concrete
and exposed finish surface of cast concrete.

3. Certificates

a) Reports certified by a surveyor, verifying that the work is within the


specified tolerances.

1.08 QUALITY CONTROL

A. The Contractor shall be responsible for the quality of work and shall develop and
propose programs and methods of construction and testing to achieve the specified
quality to the approval of the Royal Commission in accordance with
SECTION 01450.

B. Inspect erected formwork, shoring, and bracing to ensure that work is in accordance
with formwork design, and to verify that supports, fastenings, wedges, ties, and items
are secure.

C. Before concrete placement, check the lines and levels of erected formwork. Make
corrections and adjustments to ensure proper size and locations of concrete
members and stability of forming systems.

D. During concrete placement, check formwork and related supports to ensure that
forms are not displaced and that completed work will be within specified tolerances.

E. Failure to detect any defective work or material shall not in any way prevent later
rejection when the defect is discovered.

F. Quality Assurance

1. Perform work of this Section in accordance with ACI 347R, ACI 301 and
ACI 318RM.

a) Maintain one copy of standards on project site.

2. Design formwork under direct supervision of a Professional Structural


Engineer experienced in design of concrete formwork.

1.09 HEALTH AND SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

A. All works undertaken in relation to this Specification are to be completed in full


accordance with the respective health and safety requirements established by the
following:

1. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

a) Legislation, Regulation, Standards and Codes.

2. Royal Commission Regulations

a) Standards, Contractual Conditions, and Health and Safety Systems.

3. Contractor

a) Health and Safety Standards and Systems as accepted by the Royal


Commission.

B. In the absence of any of the above, best accepted industry practice shall be
employed throughout.

1.10 REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS

A. The Contractor shall conform to applicable codes for design, fabrication, erection and
removal of formwork. Codes for design of formworks, its requirements for fabrication,
erection and removal, shall be as specified in par. 1.06.

1.11 MOCK-UP

A. The Contractor shall provide formwork for mock-up or sample panels as required for
cast-in-place concrete works.

B. The Contractor shall construct forms using facing materials to obtain specified
finishes and textures.

C. The Contractor shall not proceed with formwork until sample units and forms have
been accepted by the Royal Commission.

1.12 DELIVERY, HANDLING AND STORAGE

A. The Contractor shall deliver, handle and store equipment and material units in
accordance with SECTIONS 01650 and 01660, as well as the following
requirements:

1. Deliver formwork materials in such a manner that damaged can be prevented.

2. Clearly indicate and mark on the delivery note of formwork, invoice or suppliers
certificate supplied with a consignment, in particular the identification of the
manufacturer, the country of origin, and the standard which they comply with.

3. Ensure all materials are free from contamination.

4. Do not accept damaged formwork, damaged packaged materials, and


damaged accessories.

5. Store all formwork and accessories in order to prevent damage, corrosion and
impurities.

6. Store formwork after cleaning and preparing for re-use if used before, in such
a manner that access to all different materials and kinds of formwork is
available.

7. Store materials which can be affected by weathering in appropriate shelters.

8. Clean and oil thoroughly the forms as soon as possible after stripping.

9. Fill any open seams in panels, plane warped boards, straighten metal facing
and re-match the joints. Oil the steel forms on the back as well as on the face.

10. Stack the forms off the ground on 50 mm or heavier lumber protected against
harmful weather conditions, following any necessary drying period of the
coating materials

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.01 GENERAL

A. All goods and products covered by these Specifications shall be procured, when
available, from an in-Kingdom manufacturer. Procurement of all goods and products
manufactured out-of-kingdom must be approved by the Royal Commission.

2.02 FORM TYPES FOR CONCRETE FINISH

A. Forms for Exposed Finish Concrete

1. Plywood, metal, metal-framed plywood-faced or other panel type materials


shall be acceptable to the Royal Commission, to provide continuous, straight,
and smooth as-cast surfaces.

2. Furnish in largest practicable sizes to minimize number of joints and to


conform to joint system shown on Drawings.

3. Form material shall be with sufficient thickness to withstand pressure of newly


placed concrete without bow or deflection.

B. Forms for Unexposed Finish Concrete

1. Plywood, lumber, metal, or other acceptable material.

2. Use lumber that is dressed on at least 2 edges and one side for tight fit.

3. Undressed lumber may be used if approved by the Royal Commission.

C. Forms for Textured Finished Concrete

1. Form textured finish concrete surfaces with units of face design, size,
arrangement, and configuration as shown on the Drawings or as required to
meet Royal Commission’s control sample.

2. Provide solid backing and form support to ensure stability of textured form
liners.

2.03 WOOD FORM MATERIALS

A. Wood form materials shall be either one of the following or the combination thereof,
unless otherwise indicated and approved by the Royal Commission:

1. Plywood complying with ANSI A199.1, B-B High Density Concrete Form
Overlay, Class I.

2. Plywood complying with ANSI A199.1, B-B (Concrete Form) Plywood, Class I,
Exterior Grade or better, mill-oiled and edge-sealed, with each piece bearing
the legible trademark of an approved inspection agency.

2.04 PREFABRICATED FORMS

A. Prefabricated forms shall be in accordance with the following requirements:

1. Preformed Steel Forms

a) Matched, tight fitting, stiffened to support weight of concrete without


deflection detrimental to tolerances and appearance of finished
surfaces.

2. Preformed Plastic Forms

a) Thermoplastic polystyrene form liner, tight fitting, stiffened to support


weight of concrete without deflection detrimental to tolerances and
appearance of finished surfaces.

3. Glass-Fiber-Reinforced Plastic Forms

a) Matched, tight fitting, stiffened to support weight of concrete without


deflection detrimental to tolerances and appearance of finished concrete
surfaces, 3 mm minimum wall thickness.

4. Pan Forms

a) Complete with covers and end closures to form a true, clean, smooth
concrete surface.

b) Design units for easy removal without damaging placed concrete.

c) Block adjoining pan units as required to avoid lateral deflection of


formwork during concrete placement and compaction.

d) Pan form units shall be factory fabricated using one of the following
materials:
1) Steel: 1.52 mm minimum thickness, free of dents, irregularities,
sag, and rust.
2) Hardboard: 6 mm thick, coated with waterproof plastic.
3) Glass-fiber-reinforced plastic.
4) Asphalt-impregnated corrugated material.
5) Pan form units shall be treated for moisture resistance with
factory-applied polyethylene coating, and with top and side cover
joints taped where concrete is exposed.

5. Tubular Column Type

a) Materials shall be either one of the following:


1) Round-section members with paper or fiber tubes constructed of
laminated plies using water-resistant type adhesive with wax-
impregnated exterior for weather and moisture protection. Units
shall have sufficient wall thickness to resist loads imposed by wet

concrete without deformation.


2) Round-section members with no less than 12 gage steel sheets.
Butt sections together, with bolted or keyed and welded joints.
Finish interior joints of forms smooth so there is no visible seam
on finished concrete surfaces.

2.05 FORMWORK ACCESSORIES

A. Form Ties

1. For Structures Not in Water and Salt Water (Coastal Atmospheres)

a) Factory-fabricated, adjustable length, removable or snap-off non-


metallic or galvanized steel form ties, designed to prevent form
deflection, and to prevent spalling of concrete surfaces upon removal.

b) Unless otherwise shown, use ties so that portion remaining within


concrete after removal of exterior parts shall not be less than 40 mm
from the outer concrete surface. Use form ties which will not leave a
hole larger than 25 mm diameter in the concrete surface.

2. For Structures In Water and Salt Water

a) Form ties and wires ties fabricated on the project site are not
acceptable. Arrange form ties so that when forms are removed, all ties
shall not be less than 75 mm from any surface.

b) Use stainless steel form ties or planned exposed tie hole locations,
where shown on the Contract Drawings. When used, break back point
may be 25 mm from outer concrete surface.

B. Form Coating

1. Commercial formulation form-coating compounds that will not bond with, stain,
nor adversely affect concrete surfaces, and will not impair subsequent
treatment of concrete surfaces requiring bond or adhesion, nor impede the
wetting of surfaces to be cured with water or curing compounds.

C. Form Release Agent

1. Form release agent shall be non-staining, non-reactive, rust-preventive and


compatible with subsequent surface applications to concrete.

D. Metal Inserts

1. Metal inserts shall be either one of the following:

a) Adjustable wedge inserts or malleable cast iron, complete with bolts,


nuts and washers; 20 mm bolt size unless otherwise shown.

b) Threaded inserts of malleable cast iron, furnished complete with full


depth bolts; 20 mm bolt size, unless otherwise shown.

c) Sheet metal reglets formed of the same type and gage as the flashing
metal to be built into the reglet, unless otherwise shown. Where resilient
or elastomeric sheet flashing or bituminous membranes are terminated
in reglets, provide reglets of not less than 0.45 mm galvanized sheet
metal. Size, shape and install reglets as detailed. Fill reglet or cover face
opening to prevent intrusion of concrete or debris.

E. Corners

1. Filleted, rigid plastic type; 20 x 20 mm size unless otherwise indicated;


maximum possible lengths.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.01 INSPECTION

A. The Contractor shall examine the condition under which concrete formwork is to be
erected and shall not proceed with the work until unsatisfactory conditions have been
corrected.

B. The Contractor shall verify lines, levels and centers before proceeding with formwork
and shall ensure that dimensions comply with what are indicated on the Contract
Drawings.

3.02 EARTH FORMS

A. Vertical surfaces of sub-structures shall be cast against formworks. Earth forms for
vertical surfaces are not permitted unless otherwise approved by the Royal
Commission.

3.03 FORMWORK CONSTRUCTION

A. The Contractor shall construct formwork in accordance with the following


requirements:

1. Construct formwork, shoring and bracing to achieve design requirements, in


accordance with requirements of ACI 301.

2. Use shores and struts with positive means of adjustment capable of taking up
formwork settlement during concrete placing operations, using wedges or
jacks or a combination thereof. Use trussed supports when adequate
foundations for shores and struts cannot be secured.

3. Provide camber in formworks as required for anticipated deflection due to


weight and pressure of fresh concrete and construction loads to long span
members without intermediate supports.

4. Construct forms to the exact sizes, shapes, lines and dimensions shown, and
as required to obtain accurate alignment, location, grades, levels, and plumb
work in finish structures. Use selected materials to obtain required finishes.

5. Construct formwork to permit for an easy removal without hammering or prying


against concrete surfaces. Use crush plates or wrecking plates where stripping
may damage cast concrete surfaces.

6. Use top forms for inclined surfaces where the slope is too steep to hold the
shape of the concrete during placement unless there is a continuous mat of
bars or mesh sufficient to keep the concrete in place.

7. For curved surfaces, interpolate intermediate sections as necessary, and


construct the forms so that the curvature will be continuous between sections.
Where necessary to meet requirements for curvature, the form lumber shall be
built-up of laminated splines cut to make tight, smooth form surfaces.

8. Provide temporary openings where interior area of formwork is inaccessible for


cleanout, for inspection before concrete placement, for accommodating other
works such as mechanical and electrical works, and for placement of concrete.
Brace temporary closures and set tightly to forms to prevent loss of concrete
mortar. Locate temporary openings on forms in as inconspicuous location as
possible, consistent with project requirements.

9. Place steel forms with ribs perpendicular to supports and secure with plug
welds to each support using curved welding washers. If required, use vent
clips for roof slabs, at each side lap and spaced approximately 1120 mm on
centers.

10. Erect falsework and support, brace and maintain it to safely support vertical,
lateral and asymmetrical loads applied until such loads can be supported by in-
place concrete structures. Construct falsework so that adjustments can be
made for take-up and settlement.

11. Align joints and make watertight. Keep form joints to a minimum.

12. Install void forms in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations. Protect


forms from moisture or crushing.

13. If formwork is placed after reinforcement, resulting in insufficient concrete


cover over reinforcement, request instructions from Royal Commission before
proceeding.

3.04 FORM COATINGS

A. Requirements for the application of form coatings, by the Contractor, shall be in


accordance with the following:

1. Coat the form’s contact surfaces with form coating compound before
reinforcement is placed. Do not allow excess form coating material to
accumulate in the forms or to come into contact with surfaces which will be
bonded to fresh concrete. Apply in compliance with manufacturer’s
instructions.

2. Coat steel forms with a non-staining, rust-preventive form oil or otherwise


protect against rusting. Rust-stained steel formwork is not acceptable.

3. Do not apply form release agent where concrete surfaces will receive special
finishes or applied coverings that are affected by agent. Soak inside surfaces
of untreated forms with clean water. Keep surfaces coated prior to placement
of concrete.

3.05 INSERTS, EMBEDDED PARTS, AND OPENINGS

A. Formed openings and anything that is to be positioned within a concrete form for
permanent embedment in the hardened concrete shall be provided by the Contractor,
in conformance with the following requirements:

1. Provide formed openings where required for items to be embedded in passing

through concrete work.

2. Locate and set in place items that will be cast directly into concrete.

3. Coordinate with work of other Sections in forming and placing openings, slots,
reglets, recesses, sleeves, bolts, anchors, other inserts, and components of
other work.

4. Install accessories in accordance with manufacturer's instructions, so they are


straight, level, and plumb. Ensure items are not disturbed during concrete
placement.

5. Install waterstops in accordance with manufacturer's instructions so that they


are continuous without displacing reinforcement.

6. Provide temporary ports or openings in formwork where required to facilitate


cleaning and inspection. Locate openings at bottom of forms to allow flushing
water to drain.

7. Close temporary openings with tight fitting panels, flush with inside face of
forms, and neatly fitted so joints will not be apparent in exposed concrete
surfaces.

3.06 FORM CLEANING

A. The Contractor shall clean the forms as erection proceeds, to remove foreign matter
within forms.

B. The Contactor shall clean formed cavities of debris prior to placing concrete.
1. Flush with water or use compressed air to remove remaining foreign matter.
2. Ensure that water and debris drain to exterior through clean-out ports.

3.07 FORMWORK TOLERANCES

A. Construct formwork to maintain tolerances required by ACI 301.

3.08 SHORES AND SUPPORTS

A. The Contractor shall comply with ACI 347 for shoring and re-shoring in multi-storey
construction, and as herein specified.

B. If buildings exceed 4 stories, the Contractor shall:

1. Extend shoring at least 3 floors under floor or roof being placed.

2. Shore floor directly under floor or roof being placed, so that loads from
construction above will transfer directly to these shores.

3. Space out shoring in stories below this level in such a manner that no floor or

member will be excessively loaded or will induce stress in concrete members


where no reinforcing steel is provided.

4. Extend shores beyond minimums if required to ensure the proper distribution


of loads throughout the structure.

C. The Contractor shall remove shores and reshores in a planned sequence to avoid
damage to partially cured concrete and shall locate and provide adequate re-shoring
to safely support the work without excessive stress or deflection.

3.09 FORM REMOVAL

A. The Contractor shall remove formwork and forms in accordance with the following
requirements:

1. Form removal shall be in accordance with ACI 347R unless noted herein.

2. Formwork not supporting concrete, such as sides of beams, walls, columns,


and similar parts of the work, may be removed after cumulatively curing at not
less than 10°C for 24 hours after placing concrete, provided concrete is
sufficiently hard not to be damaged by form removal operation, and provided
that curing and protection operations are maintained.

3. Formwork supporting weight of concrete, such as beam soffits, joists, slabs,


and other structural elements shall not be removed until concrete has attained
the designed 28-day compressive strength.

4. Determine potential compressive strength of in-place concrete by testing field


cured specimens representative of the concrete locations or members. But
when field operations are not controlled by control tests, under ordinary
conditions, forms and supports shall remain in place for not less than the
periods specified in par. 3.11.

5. Form facing material may be removed 4 days after placement, only if shores
and other vertical supports have been arranged to permit removal of form
facing material without loosening or disturbing shores and supports.

3.10 RE-USE OF FORMS

A. The Contractor can re-use the forms only after the following requirements have been
met:

1. Clean and repair surfaces of forms to be re-used in the work. Do not re-use
split, frayed, delaminated or otherwise damaged form facing materials.

2. When forms are extended for successive concrete placement, thoroughly


clean surfaces, remove fins and laitance, and tighten forms to close all joints.

3. Align and secure joints to avoid offsets.

4. Do not re-use patched forms for exposed concrete surfaces, except as


acceptable to the Royal Commission.

3.11 MINIMUM REMOVAL TIME FOR FORMWORK

A. In the absence of field cured concrete specimens, as discussed in par. 3.09 A.4,
the Contractor shall remove the forms and supports not less than the periods of time
shown below.
