quality for materials, products and workmanship. In case of conflict between these
standards and the text of this Specification, the Specification text shall govern.
B. The latest revision of the referred codes and standards shall be used wherever
applicable. In case of conflict, the Contractor shall propose equipment, materials and
processes conforming to one group of codes and standards.
1.05 DEFINITIONS
A. backshores: Shores placed snugly under a concrete slab or structural member after
the original formwork and shores have been removed from a small area without
allowing the slab or member to deflect or support its own weight or existing
construction loads from above.
E. form: A temporary structure or mold for the support of concrete while it is setting and
gaining sufficient strength to be self-supporting.
F. form coating: A liquid that may be applied to the surface of the form for one or more
of the following purposes: to protect the form surface and give it long life, to retard
the set of the surface of the concrete to make it easy to expose the aggregate at a
later time, or to promote the ease with which formwork can be removed.
G. form release agent: A liquid applied to the surface of a form to promote easy
removal (stripping) of the form from the concrete.
H. form tie: A manufactured steel wire, bar, or rod specially designed to prevent
concrete forms from spreading due to the fluid pressure of freshly placed concrete.
I. formwork: Total system of support for freshly placed concrete including the mold or
sheathing that contacts the concrete as well as all supporting members, hardware,
and necessary bracing.
J. insert: Anything other than reinforcing steel that is rigidly positioned within a
concrete form for permanent embedment in the hardened concrete.
K. preshores: Added shores placed snugly under selected panels of a deck forming
system before any primary (original) shores are removed. Preshores and the panels
they support remain in place until the remainder of the complete bay has been
stripped and backshored, a small area at a time.
L. reshores: Shores placed snugly under a stripped concrete slab or other structural
member after the original forms and shores have been removed from a large area,
thus requiring the new slab or structural member to deflect and support its own
weight and existing construction loads applied prior to the installation of the reshores.
M. shores: Vertical or inclined support members designed to carry the weight of the
formwork, concrete, and construction loads above.
A. The design and engineering of formwork shall be the responsibility of the Contractor
and it shall be in accordance with ACI 318RM, ACI 347 and 347R.
D. The surface of forms shall be engineered and designed to provide correct finish.
E. Formwork shall be designed so they can easily and safely removed without impact or
shock or damage to concrete surfaces and adjacent materials.
