College Students Wants to Become Entrepreneurs

By Christopher Bak

On Tuesday, Feb. 12 the entrepreneur, Melissa Sevy, visited Southern Utah University to tell

her story on how she succeeded in creating her own company, Fair Kind, based off of the

values of ethical consumerism.

Sevy noticed a spike in the younger generation’s tendencies to hold large corporations

accountable for the processes which shape and created her products.

More than 100 college students from Southern Utah University attended Sevy’s lecture on

how to do good through business. Sevy talked about how her company is in more than six

developing countries, and how her business helps more than 300 women and that Fair Kind’s

market is in the USA.

The attendees were interested in Sevy’s story, and they eagerly asked her questions about her

upcoming. One of the attendees was an SUU student, Kevin Anderson, a sophomore

majoring in business. Anderson, said, “The reason I’m attending this lecture is to hear other

entrepreneurs story about how they succeed. I wish one day to become a successful

entrepreneur myself, and I have learned a lot. I learned that business is built on relationships

and that we sometimes fail fast and fail often. But all we have to do is to get back on the

horse and try again.”

After Sevy’s lecture 12 college students got to go eat lunch with her, where they could ask

her questions face to face, to learn more about her story. One of the college students who

went to lunch with Sevy was an SUU student, Andrew Acosta, a freshman majoring in

communication. He said after lunch “It was very exciting to go eat lunch with Sevy, and she

went more in-depth with our questions which were really cool. She got me even more

motivated in becoming an entrepreneur, but personally, I think that my company is gonna be

a for-profit, where the company would pay back to the community by doing some

sustainability.”

Every week there will be a new entrepreneur coming to SUU to give a lecture about how they

succeeded in becoming an entrepreneur. Next week the founder at Wealth Factory and NY

Times Bestselling Author, Garen Gunderson, will come to SUU and tell his story.
