Guidelines for Pre-thesis / Final Thesis Report writing

M. Tech. (Power System Engineering)

 Contents of Project report


The Project Report should contain the items as outlined below and is to be presented in
the order as listed.

 Number of Copies to be submitted to the Department


Number of group members plus three copies (for pre-thesis) & five (for final thesis)
has to be prepared. Hard copy of the report is to be submitted to the Department after
corrections done as suggested by guide/Department at any time when report submission
is called by guide/Department.

 Requirements for Report Writing


Your report should meet following standards:
Font Name: Times New Roman(for normal text)
Font Size: 12 pt (for body of text)
Left Margin: 1.5 inch
Right Margin: 1.25 inch
Top Margin: 1.25 inch
Bottom Margin: 1.25 inch
Line Spacing: 1.5
Paragraph Spacing: 18 pt

1. Follow following standard for headings


Font Size:
 Chapter title 16 pt (Bold) title case
 Heading e.g. 1.1 14 pt(Bold) title case
 Subtitle e.g. 1.1.1 12 pt (Bold) title case
 Subtitle e.g. 1.1.1.1 12 pt (Bold) title case
2. There should be uniformity in writing headings and sub-headings in all chapters.
3. Avoid underlines and colon i.e. :
4. To indicate a figure, write below the figure and the format should be Fig. 1.5.
5. To indicate a table, write above the table and the format should be Table 1.5.
6. All the figure captions and table captions should be 12 size, bold and title case.
7. Figures used in the report should not be blur.Candidate should try to draw
the figures on their own.
8. All the figures and tables should be mentioned/referred/explained in the
adjoining paragraphs.
9. Always number the equations, tables and figures chapter wise, for e.g. 4 lh figure in
chapter 5 will bear the number Fig.5.4.

10. Equations should be written compulsorily using MathType equation editor.
11. Never write report in first person i.e. "I will do this". Instead write author....
12. In Literature survey, do not give full mention of the paper. Instead write like this:
Gambhir el al. in [1] have discussed/concluded/suggestcd/rcported. Here [1] is
the number of the paper mentioned in References and Bibliography.
13. In References and Bibliography, the mention of paper should be
[11] Chatterji S. (the names of all authors), "Title", Journal or proceedings of
the conference, Vol.5, Issue/No.2, pp 365-370. month, year of publication.

12. All the mentioned references should be cited in the report compulsorily.
13. The sequence of chapters should be like this
 Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Background & Motivation
1.2 Objective
1.3 Delimitation of research
1.4 Benefits of research
 Chapter 2 Literature Survey
2.1 Literature Review
2.2 Inferences Drawn from Literature Review
 Chapter 3 Problem Formulation and Proposed Work
3.1 Introduction
3.2 Problem Statement
3.3 Definition of problem statement terms
3.4 Proposed Work
3.5 Conclusion
 Chapter 4 Methodology
4.1 Introduction
4.2 Implementation Strategy (Flowchart, Algorithm etc.)
4.3 Tools/Hardware/Software to be used
4.4 Expected Outcome (Performance metrics with details)

14. After introductory chapter & literature survey, each chapter should have an introduction
& conclusion.
 Introduction should consist of brief detail of the jist of current chapter & should
link with the previous chapter
 Conclusion will consist of an overview of the heads covered in current chapter &
how it will lead to next chapter.

 ARRANGEMENT OF CONTENTS:
The sequence in which the project report material should be arranged and bound should be
as follows:
1. Title Page (Glazed paper)
2. Declaration
3. Certificate from supervisor
4. Certificate by the examiner
5. Acknowledgment
6. Abstract
7. Table of Contents
8. List of Figures (if any)
9. List of Tables (if any)
10. List of Symbols (if any)
11. Abbreviations (if any)
12. Chapters
13. References
14. Appendices

 BINDING SPECIFICATIONS:
Reports are to be Spiral bound ( Pre-thesis) & bound in BLACK colored hard cover (Final
Thesis) and golden print (engrossed) with written materials in black script on the title page
of the report. Number of pages should be minimum 40 ( for Pre-Thesis ) & should be
minimum 60 ( for Final Thesis ).
