SUMMARY

The main objective of the experiment was to observe the visual patterns of convective and
nucleate boiling and to determine heat flux and heat transfer coefficient in nucleate boiling
region. Throughout the experiment the pressure was kept constant and pool boiling was carried
out. Forane-141b was used as the liquid and boiled by electric power in H653 boiling heat
transfer unit. A flow of cool water was provided to condense the vapor in order to maintain
constant pressure at 35 kPa. In gradual increasing of current the temperature reading of element,
liquid, inlet and outlet water were measured. The flow rate of water and ammeter and voltmeter
reading were also noted. The heat flux, heat transfer coefficient and heat loss were calculated
from observed data. Then the graphs of heat flux vs. wall superheat and heat transfer coefficient
vs. wall superheat were plotted. The value of heat flux varied from 14.27 W/m2 to 54.62 W/m2
and the heat transfer coefficient found varying from 27.63 W/m2. °C to 65.02 W/m2 °C. The
overall heat transfer coefficient was found varying from 40.60 W/m2 °C to 416.61 W/m2 °C and
calculated heat loss varied from 5.96 W to 14.28 W.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The enterprise of the report was based on the experiment “Study of Heat Transfer in Boiling
Liquid” carried out in the unit operation laboratory in the department of Chemical engineering. I
am expressing my gratitude to everyone related to the course “Chemical Engineering
Laboratory-II” for helping me in performing the experiment and making this report.

First of all I sincerely express my regards to Mr. Nazibul Islam Sir for helping me throughout
the whole process. His thoroughly discussion about the boiling process and heat transfer in
boiling liquid made the experiment easy to understand. Again his valuable guidance and
suggestions was very important for making this report. Then I would like to thank the lab
assistants for their kind help during the experiment. I would also like to thank my four group
mates for cooperating and helping me in the experiment as well as making this report.
