extraction
Extraction
 Extraction refers to-
 Mass transfer operation
Separation of desired material from mixtures

Extraction
Several types
 Solid-liquid extraction or Leaching
 Liquid-liquid extraction
 Solid phase extraction
Solid-liquid
extraction(leaching)
The removal of soluble material from an insoluble solid phase
by dissolution in a liquid solvent.
Leaching –
 Mainly a diffusion process
 Can be used after mechanical extraction
 Used to increase efficiency
Solvent Selection
Requirement

 Good solubility of the oil than other component

 High volatility
 Low viscosity
 Low latent heat of evaporation & specific heat
 Absolute absence of toxicity and carcinogenicity
 Availability in large quantities and low cost
Soxhlet apparatus

 A laboratory apparatus invented by Franz von Soxhlet

 Designed for the extraction of solid from liquid
 Consists of thimble chamber, distillation arm, siphon
 Equipped with a condenser and a round bottom flask
 Thimble made from thick filter paper loaded by solid
 Applicable if desired compound has limited solubility in a solvent
Experimental Setup

Figure 1: Experimental setup for determining the extraction of oil from oil-cake
Experimental Setup

Figure 2: Experimental setup for determining solvent recovery

Procedure
1. A measured amount of smashed oil cake was placed in the thimble
2. The solvent was taken in the round bottom flask
3. The solvent was heated to evaporate
4. The vapor of n-hexane was condensed
5. Several siphoning was observed
6. Extraction was stopped and weighing n-hexane with extracted oil
Procedure (continued)

7. Reassembling the apparatus for solvent recovery

8. Continuing the heating until no more solvent was being recovered
9. Recovering n-hexane and amount of extraction of oil was being
weighed and percent extraction of oil and percent recovery of
solvent (n-hexane) were calculated.
Observed Data

Weight of empty thimble = 3.850 gm

Weight of (thimble + oil cake) = 32.745 gm
Weight of empty round bottom flask = 125.486 gm
Weight of (round bottom flask + n-Hexane) = 196.851 gm
Weight of (oil+ round bottom flask) = 127.801 gm
Weight of conical flask = 102.808 gm
Weight of (conical flask + n-Hexane recovered) = 140.842 gm
Calculation

Percentage of extracted oil in oil cake = (weight of oil extracted/actual

amount of oil cake) × 100%

= (2.35/2.80)× 100%

= 82.67 %

Percentage of recovery of solvent = (recovered solvent/ Initially used

solvent) )× 100%
= (38.034/71.365) )× 100%

=53.30 %
Results

Percentage extraction of oil = 83%

Percentage recovery of the solvent = 53%.
