5th Grade Ukulele


Goal: Review C and F Chord, Introduce(?) transposition with “This Old Hammer”

 Have the tab outline on the board and have the students draw the C and F chord
o Draw a circle where your finger goes
o What number finger goes here?
o How do we identify an open string?
 Review Oh, My Darling modeling the ukulele chords

 Thou art lost and gone forever, dreadful sorry, Clementine.

 Learn This Old Hammer modeling with ukulele

 This old hammer shine like silver, shine like gold, boys, shine like gold.
 Well this old hammer shine like silver, shine like gold, boys, shine like
gold.
 Using the piano, sing This Old Hammer as written (in F) and then transpose to C
o Introduce (?) transposition
 Kids who helped write the tabs grab ukuleles first
 Have them make a large arc around the teacher
 “Everyone show me your F chord”
 Sing and play through This Old Hammer on an F chord twice
 “Everyone show me your C chord”
 Sing and play on C chord twice
 Try singing and playing on F and repeating immediately to C
 Play a song over speaker that features a key change (just the part with the key change)
 With time remaining, sing and play Oh My Darling with the chord changes
o Magic lips the first couple times with just ukulele
o Singing only while moving your fingers in position
o Sing and play at the same time
